The Marathon
I really thought Team USA would do better than 10th and 11th based upon their training and previous results. Proud of the way Goucher and Flanagan worked together........much as we saw yesterday with Galen and Meb.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Ha ha, like I said the last guy I remembered medaling was Ryun. I'm sure someone on PN can name the NEW guys, but I only remember the OLD guys.PurpleGeezer wrote:Ryun isn't close to being the last male medal winner in a distance event.
four other distance guys besides Meb can claim Priority over Ryun by either being newer or being longer.
one medalled twice since then.
can you name them?
Makata Taka Hela's (Billy Mills) run in '64 is still vivid....maybe because he was a Marine at the time, or maybe it was the "sappy" story of his being orphaned and being raised in poverty on an Indian reservation in South Dakota.
Heck, we didn't even have colored uniforms in those days....
Oh, and notice almost all Adidas and no Swoosh back then either (and based upon the size of the numbers worn by the competitors, it must have been before eyeglasses were invented too)!

Here's a hint.
Frank Shorter won a Gold and a Silver. even DD should remember him.
With some guy from Oregon.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Anyways, we've been (mostly) shut out of Olympic distance medals for awhile. For people of my generation and younger, seeing Rupp with a medal is quite a big deal.
Did NBC air the 100m final live? I tried to record it but all I got was horses prancing around. Had to stay up for the tape delay. Bolt is still the man!

Nope, had to read about it before seeing it delayed on NBC. Bolt's the real deal; 9.63 seconds -- WOW, it wasn't even close.pilotram wrote:Did NBC air the 100m final live? I tried to record it but all I got was horses prancing around. Had to stay up for the tape delay. Bolt is still the man!
Would liked to have seen Tyson Gay (30 years-old this coming week) get a medal, but good on Justin Gatlin, the old man (already 30), for getting the bronze. I would think this is the last Summer Olympic Games for both, but they could be bobsledder's in the Winter Games. It's been done!

He could have stopped for an interview during the race.

I wish the IOC would let multiple carriers broadcast in the US. Maybe a little competition would force them to show things live.
Remind me to figure out where to get the online feeds in four years....

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
The joke of it is if you stream off the NBC website it can turn into a buffering pixellated nightmare (Which, if you are trying to watch the 100m, renders it all moot) ... But if you use the iPad/Phone app, the thing streams like a crystal clear dream.
At least NBC let coverage start at 7 pm last night so they could have a 3 part interview with Michael Phelps. (Because he is such a compelling interview)

Phelps + Seacrest << Phelps + Collinsworth.
They actually found someone worse than Cris Collinsworth.

Yeah, but Missy Franklin basically took over for Bob Costas last night. Pretty poised for a high schooler. Even if she does have a "thing" for J. Bieber.

The NYT has a pretty cool interactive about Sprinter times over the last century.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/08/05/sports/olympics/the-100-meter-dash-one-race-every-medalist-ever.html?hp
If they had included where women are it would have been cooler.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Knowing that being an elite athlete now means 24/7 preparation compared to the days of part-time amateur athletes (not to mention the vastly improved running surfaces), I guess a 3 second improvement in 120 years is not as dramatic as one might think...but still, is there a limit to what man can do? I don't think so!PurpleGeezer wrote:The NYT has a pretty cool interactive about Sprinter times over the last century.
What I love about Bolt is his long stride and his ability to “make up ground” in the second half of the race. Someone can look this up, but I believe he’s about 6’5” and takes about 41 strides to complete 100m while this year’s silver medalist, Blake, took at least 46.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Canada falls 91-48 to the USA Women's Basketball team and the USA Women’s Water Polo team beat Canada 11-9 in OT. Not a good week for North American relations, especially if you are north of the 49th parallel.
Saw bits of both games…….just hope our northern neighbors are not blaming the “hoser” refs, eh.

.
I'd call a 25% improvement in any human endeavour pretty significant.
It's not like we have Appreciably evolved since then or anything....

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Figured it out and watched the 800m heats and 1500m final. The random commercials they insert are kind of annoying. Glad it didn't happen during a race.

You don't say.
I also wish there was an easier way to fast forward to the specific match/heat/event you want to see instead of just giving you a three hour video to scroll through.

I was watching it live on the NBC feed, and the commercials appeared to be totally random. Not sure how they keep it out of live action.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Had to stay up late to watch it about eight hours after it was actually run, but we finally have a medalist in the 1500m, the first since Jim Ryun in 1968.
Adding to the "new flavor" of Team USA, Manzano was born in Mexico and moved to Texas at age 4.
Interesting that the winner, Makhloufi, had been kicked out of further competition for "not trying" in the 800m, but was reinstated after Algerian officials claimed he was injured and couldn't run. Man, I've got to get some of that magic elixir!!Leo Manzano of the U.S. made a serious kick on the homestretch to claim the silver medal in the men’s 1,500-meter final Tuesday night at Olympic Stadium. Manzano, 27, placed second behind Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi, who won in 3 minutes, 34.08 seconds. American Matt Centrowitz placed fourth.
Asbel Kiprop of Kenya, the defending Olympic champion and heavy favorite, faded badly and finished at the back of the pack.
Manzano finished in 3:34.79, making him the first U.S. athlete to medal in the 1,500 since Jim Ryun won silver at the Mexico City Games in 1968, and adding to what’s turning into a distance-running renaissance for the Americans here in London. Galen Rupp won silver in the 10,000 meters on Saturday, snapping a 48-year U.S. medal drought in the event.
