Pilots vs Portland Bible College Friday Dec 14 @ 7:30
With the fall semester and finals over, it’s time for the Pilots to clear the fog of studying and testing and have some fun on the court.
Tomorrow’s game against Portland Bible is considered to be no more than a scrimmage by some, but I doubt the players are looking at the game that way....especially the Wildcat players.
The Wildcats are 13-3 this year and have one common opponent with UP:
UP beat Lewis & Clark 78-73
Lewis & Clark beat Portland Bible College 82-78
Copied directly from the Portland Bible College website:
In 2007-08, inaugural season, won the ACCA Division 2 National Championship in Oklahoma. In 2nd season, won PCAC title, finished 4th at Nationals at ACCA D1, 29-7 overall. In 3rd season, finished 6th at NCCAA 2 National tournament, won 2nd consecutive PCAC Title and won NCCAA West Region Title. In their 4th season, won 2nd consecutive NCCAA West Region title and advanced to national tournament for 4th consecutive season. Last season, the Wildcats made it all the way to the West Regional Championship but missed out on national tournament for first time in school history.
Enrollment: 415
Nickname: Wildcats
Colors: Black/Red/Grey
Athletic Association: NCCAA

The Wildcat's have an interesting roster. A couple of things I noticed at first glance... They are a short team. Their tallest player is listed at 6'6" and they have three listed at 6'4". Their roster only lists two post players - zero centers and two PF's both 6'4". Perhaps they are Charles Barkley-esq? I loved watching the Round Mound of Rebound play.

The UP Atheletic Department website finally posted information on the game tonight, and the article shows the Wildcats to be 13-4.

Maybe they were already preparing the post game write up? I only see 13-3, plus an Alumni game. Also...they started playing in October it appears so they've had a month more to play.

Re: Pilots vs Portland Bible College Friday Dec 14 @ 7:30
Kevin Bailey finally had his breakout game for the season in the Pilots easy win, equaling his point total from last year against USD and LMU, but tonight he almost couldn’t miss on his way to 22 points in 25 minutes. It was great to see him smiling and enjoying himself….even when he was flushed by #22 who promptly taunted KB and received a technical for his transgression. KB calmly sank both free throws.
It’s always tough to play a variety of lineups, but my biggest disappointment in the team tonight was the number of turnovers (16), but the rebounding and blocks against a much shorter team were good to see.
It was nice to see Tanner Riley break out of an early season slump….let’s hope he can continue to keep his mojo going in the games ahead. The freshmen played like freshmen, but at least they played, including Bryce Pressley who didn’t seem to be suffering any ill effects from his recent concussion.
Oh, finally spoke to Dorian; he leaves Tuesday for “Cali” and will transfer, but he’s not sure where. He loves Portland and the people here, but hasn’t talked to the PSU staff.

KB and T. Riley's shooting was encouraging. KB in particular made a few TOUGH mid- and long-range jump shots. I agree with DD that the turnovers were disappointing. Also, the point guards continued to struggle on offense, missing a bunch of shots and lay-ups. I'm not convinced that it helps the team to have played this game. The proof will be in the pudding, with four games coming up in the span of a week, beginning on Monday.

We needed an easy game after that last stretch, but I'm not convinced this game helps either. There's scheduling cupcakes and then there's....well....personally I think we should have scheduled a more difficult game than one against Portland Bible College. One that was still quite easy. Maybe a top level NAIA school or consistently bad NCAA 1 team. Perhaps a team making the transition to NCAA 1?

Re: Pilots vs Portland Bible College Friday Dec 14 @ 7:30
1)Tonight's game against CSUB and Wednesday's game against N. Florida were scheduled last April as part of the tournament this coming weekend in Las Vegas. 2) Final Exams did not allow the Pilots to go on the road until Saturday. So, a combination of those two factors meant the team was caught in the middle; they couldn’t travel and no team would come to the Chiles Center.
The coaches would love to have all D-1 opponents, but no team would travel to Portland to play them on the day(s) the Pilots had available. Coach Rev has an open invitation to all (especially the Oregon/Washington schools), but other potential opponents had other plans.
Personally, I think the game DID help. The guys were coming out of the fog of exam week and really got it on in terms of playing together as a team after limited team practice during the week. The guys that needed to get some minutes got some, and the guys who were good enough with just a few minutes got some rest.
UP did not bury PBC, but yes they were the superior team. I think if you were to ask David, Oskars, or Riley if they thought the game was too easy, they'd say NO!

I don't doubt that the game was a good chance for the team to blow off some steam and get their basketball heads back on after finals... I just wish I didnt have to pay for it in my season tickets.

I found the game to be a good chance to visit with other fans and share holiday good cheer while not having to devote my efforts to helping the team.

Re: Pilots vs Portland Bible College Friday Dec 14 @ 7:30
If only it was that easy to make a schedule. The Cascade Conference (the one with all the NW NAIA schools) is just starting its conference season and they play Fridays and Saturdays anyway. Lots of D1 teams do make the rounds this time of year because guarantee games are how they pay the bills. But teams like that can get more money out of a power conference school like Oregon or OSU. That's probably why Chicago State was in Corvallis instead of Portland this weekend.dholcombe wrote:NoPoNeighbor wrote:I'm not convinced that it helps the team to have played this game.

As DD said the staff does what they can to find quality opponents but things rarely work out perfectly.

Easy solution.
Step 1. Pay someone to come play
Step 2. Increase attendance (Typically the ??? step)
Step 3. Profit!!!
Easy right? Now about that step 2....

I've iced it down and will be good to go Wednesday.
BTW, I had the opportunity to meet Geez's 92 year-old mother-in-law tonight; she was sitting in the first row behind the visitors bench...hmmm. I did offer to get her a gin & tonic, thinking that is the preferred drink for women over 90, but she turned me down, flat!

You should have offered her a Manhattan. (perfect, up, with Grandad's as the Burbon.)

I'll probably see her again Wednesday, and may have to go with Geez's advice offering a Manhattan up with Grandad's as the Burbon. Seriously? Is that an East Coast drink?

Where do you think Manhattan is?
If you are going to do it, do it right. A perfect Manhattan is half sweet vermouth and half dry vermouth mixed 1:2 with the Bourbon. She likes a splash of the bitters and a meriscino cherry - must have a stem. And, oh yeah...it must be chilled.
Or you can substitute some Imbue vermouth for the mixture. that's a bit more spendy, though.

Apparently women drinking whiskey (although I've yet to see one drinking scotch whisky) is the new thing. I've seen it a lot in the last 5 years or so. It's apparently the new way to be an empowered woman. Skip the umbrella drinks and get a whiskey. I would not have guessed it extended all the way up to that demographic however.
I rarely see women drink anything else straight. Maybe tequila shots...but that's a whole different stereotype.

Ugh.....I believe I lack the sophistication required to pull this off.
I was telling ShipstadPilot11 earlier this evening how much I really enjoy Widmer’s Brrr Seasonal Ale…..I think it’s that or nothing for dear “old” mother-in-law, and for me!
