Incoming Pilots
We have two incoming Pilots heading to Carson for National team camps next week..
Ellie Boon and Allison Weatherington.
Looks like they scrimmage the day before signing day.
It also looks like Imani Dorsey is making another run at college life, as a forward this time....

Re: Incoming Pilots
The soccer recruiting site has a commitment to the Pilots for 2014 in Madelyn Seckman from the Seattle Area. She is a 5'8" center back from Kamiak HS and the Crosssfire club. It looks like her coach is Justi Baumgard, so I expect she sent us a good one.

Re: Incoming Pilots
I noticed that Top Drawer has some premium content (that I cannot access) with this title: Portland, Santa Clara land top classes. Can anyone access this and give us a summary?

Re: Incoming Pilots
The article highlighted the TDS/IMG Top 150 ranks for the 2013 class of the WCC. I think everyone can see the commitment lists for each school, with ranks. Pilots' class looks competitive/good.
Portland | Santa Clara | BYU | St. Mary's | Gonzaga |
Boon #43 | Galvan #44 | Deardon #56 | Schmidt #117 | Bergquist #103 |
Wetherington #19 | Stanton #23
Elmer #106 | Roering #149
Hall #60 | Johnson #96 | |||
Evans #33 | Jesolva #85 |

Noticed other teams were posting their signees for the 2013 class. Any idea when Portland will make known who they have signed?

Re: Incoming Pilots
You will probably have to wait. UP doesn't report it's signings until all the letters are back and admissions has signed off on them, which takes a while.
The best way to find out who actually signed is from the news reports that will start surfacing starting today of signing ceremonies at player's schools.
Last year was a surprising exception, and they announced players starting with signing day and announced into the first week in March as they came in.
Start googling

Re: Incoming Pilots
The huskies already announced theirs, including mid-year admit Amanda Perez, sister of Veronica who was a great player for them. We might see her this Spring.

Re: Incoming Pilots
Elmer is a new one to me, from the Utah Avalanche. Maybe a new spot opened up with Kendall going pro?
Re: Incoming Pilots
From the Chronicle online.com:
http://www.thechronicleonline.com/sports/article_7eb52104-70b6-11e2-acbe-001a4bcf887a.htmlSCAPPOOSE — A crowd of about 25 people gathered in the lobby near the Scappoose High School auditorium at 2 p.m. on Feb. 6 to watch Ariel Viera sign her National Letter of Intent to play soccer with the University of Portland Pilots.
Viera, a senior at Scappoose, was joined by family, her high school teammates and coaches, and SHS administrators for the occasion. After signing her paperwork, Viera cut into a purple and white cake to celebrate.
Viera has known for a couple years that UP would be her destination. Because of NCAA rules, it could not become official until National Signing Day, Feb. 6.
Viera will receive both athletic and academic scholarships to help offset tuition costs. Viera has a 3.95 grade point average and will study biology.

The Olympian has Allysa Edenstrom listed as having signed
http://www.theolympian.com/2013/02/06/2412869/signing-day-list-of-south-sound.html
By my count, we are still looking for something from Parkes Kendrick from Grant and Allison Wetherington from GA

Re: Incoming Pilots
Ah ha, Garrett uses reverse psychology in his recruiting….
This from this morning’s Oregonian (edited):
This from this morning’s Oregonian (edited):
(Ellie) Boon's name might have become lost this season because she opted not to play high school soccer as a senior. But Boon is well known among college coaches and was able to pick Portland over Santa Clara, two of the West Coast Conference's top women's soccer programs.
Boon said she felt she had to sell herself to Portland rather than the other way around. Boon said she came away from her first meeting with Pilots coach Garrett Smith in tears.
"They only want players who want to go to Portland. They're not going to bribe you," Boon said. "The first time I met with Garrett, he asked, 'How are you going to improve our program?' I wasn't prepared for that.
"I thought I blew it with Portland. I don't like to be cocky, so when (Smith) asked me, 'Do you think you can play here?' I said, 'I think so.' He said, 'Call me when you know you can.' "
Boon eventually warmed up to the Pilots and ultimately Portland offered a better financial package than Santa Clara. Boon, who plays outside defensive back for the national team, thinks she'll probably play as a wing forward at Portland.

Re: Incoming Pilots
well, the "we only want players who want to go to Portland" has been so since the Clive years.
Why waste time with kids who don't really want to come?

Re: Incoming Pilots
I think I am as excited as everyone else to see the new recruits perform, but am doubly excited to see Mikayla Elmer and what talents she brings. Much in the same way as Kassie and Lorielle, Mikayla has a younger sister with a building list of accolades. Mariah is on the Utah Avalanche team also and will be, I think, a senior next fall.
This appears to be one heckuva recruiting group.
