Re: The 2013 Offseason
Ossie Schectman passed away today (7/30)…..but on November 1, 1946 he scored the first basket ever made in NBA history (then known as the Basketball Association of America) when the Toronto Huskies played his New York Knickerbockers.
No, I wasn’t there, but the video of the basket showing a great give-and-go followed by the underhanded layup is very reminiscent of my days at UP....the "set-shot," shown after the layup, was however almost a thing of the past in the 60's!

Re: The 2013 Offseason
That was a very good find DD, in fact I have never even asked myself the question as to whom scored the first ever basket.
This DD is why I love reading your posts. Keep em coming!

Re: The 2013 Offseason
It is my understanding that Oskars is now enrolled at Pensacola State College, a two-year JC, and last week committed to transfer to Troy University in Alabama.DoubleDipper wrote:I too was heartened to see Riga mentioned in his tweet.....Oskars has traveled a lot since leaving UP, and I don't know if he's now at home, but it would be nice if they are staying in touch. Not just to help Oskars get back to UP, but also just to help ensure he's keeping his life on track.....
Troy is a D-1 school and plays in the Sun Belt Conference.

How about grey cardboard sillouettes to put in the seats in the Student section?

If it's grey you want, I'm pretty sure up7587 can get us 1500 of these:Geezaldinho wrote:How about grey cardboard sillouettes to put in the seats in the Student section?

Re: The 2013 Offseason
So when does practice officially start? Isn't it much earlier this year than in previous years?

Re: The 2013 Offseason
As you may recall from a previous post by DJ Sherman, and thanks to the Division I Legislative Council, men's basketball teams can now have "30 days of practice in the six weeks before their first regular-season game." The Legislative Council also removed the 5PM start time to allow for more flexibility for kickoff events in a separate measure.DeanMurdoch wrote:So when does practice officially start? So, backing up six weeks from UP’s first regular season game against UC-Davis on Friday November 8, the earliest team practice can begin is Friday September 27.

Re: The 2013 Offseason
Thanks! I remember that post but couldn't find it for the life of me.
So practice in a week, eh? Starting to be the time of year where chatter transitions from off-court stuff to on-court stuff.

Re: The 2013 Offseason
It's still the offseason, but as UP prepares for this coming season, at least one decision has been made....the team's slogan.
If you've been following the Men's Basketball on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/upmensbasketball?sk=wall, you'll know there's been a contest to choose this season's slogan, and the winner is UP junior Ryan Kain, and the slogan for the 2013-14 season is:
At least I hope that's how the season goes......

YOU DIDN'T SEE THIS COMING
I like it. Knowing UP's struggles over the last couple of years, many teams will naturally overlook the Pilots on their schedule considering the game and "easy" win.......so when those teams are being thumped by the Pilots, they'll most likely exclaim "Wow, we didn't see this coming." At least I hope that's how the season goes......

Re: The 2013 Offseason
Good question, Geez.....remember the team is allowed 30 practices in a 42 day period, so there will obviously not be practice every day.Geezaldinho wrote:What are practice times?
Here's the schedule for the first 5 practices:
1. Friday 9/27 7-11 am (The disparity in the starting time listed here and Rev's tweet of 8 am could mean the action doesn't begin until 8 am.....but I'm just guessing).
2. Monday 9/30 7-11 am
3. Tuesday 10/1 7-11 am
4. Thursday 10/3 7-11 am
5. Saturday 10/5 11 am - 3 pm
Only 25 more practices to follow before opening against UC-Davis.....give the UP Athletic Department a call if you want to know other times.....all the teams at UP should have their practice schedules listed on their computers.
