Agreed! That video and Rev's posting of the Etzel Field renovations appear to be aimed exactly in that direction.DTLegend wrote:I would have to guess that Eubanks is Portland's top target and that they are spending a lot of time and coming up with unique ideas (like the "Portland: Where big men go to develop" video) on reaching the kid.
I believe Reynolds High School has another D-I caliber big man coming along as sophomore next year....let's start a pipeline!

I'm sure it hasn't been lost during the recruiting process that both OSU and Gonzaga have a significant PF coming in as a freshman this season. Cam Oliver is a four-star guy for OSU that they had to fend off a host of other Pac-12 schools for, and as we know Gonzaga has Sabonis Jr incoming and they're extremely high on him.
UP has a lot going for it when it comes time for Eubanks to make his decision. Chance for significant playing time right away with Gerun/Barker/vdM all gone after this year on a team that won't be completely bare with Pressley and Wintering both back, proven history of big man development, new practice facility to be ready by the time fall of 2015 rolls around...Etzel Field being redone can't hurt either!

UP has made it to the top-6 for Travis Fuller, 6'-8" forward from San Diego. Verbal Commits lists 15 scholarship offers.

UW, not Gonzaga? Conflicting reports over the past few days.

Might as well rename this thread Eubanks Central for the time being.
Scout.com re-did their top 100. Eubanks comes in at #96 in the entire country in the class of 2015 and is considered a 4-star guy by them. (Hat tip to DT Legend, he tweeted that out)
Rivals and ESPN have him as a 3-star guy.
Figured Kendall Small would be the Pilots' only sniff at a nationally ranked recruit this year. Made it to the final five with Small, hopefully a better outcome here. Eubanks would look great as a PF/C alongside Hartwich....

Marshall is entering his sophomore year at Palm Beach State College, a two year school in Lake Worth, FL.
Palm Beach State MBB@PalmBeachMBB
Jarrel Marshall (6'6, F) has heard from Portland, Charleston Southern, FAU, IPFW, Gardner Webb, Fairfield & St Peters.
Marshall graduated from Mt. Vernon HS, New York in 2012 then reclassified to the 2013 class while attending Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts. NDP maintains an enrollment of around 35 students and is, “primarily known for its basketball program which has developed college and professional players........"
Marshal reminds me of KB on offense…..I have no idea what his defensive capabilities are.

Here I thought this was going to be a Drew Eubanks update.
Can see where you're making the KB comparisons with Jarrel. Bouncy and athletic guy.

Sad news.....I was just reading an article about the number of D-1 schools, including UP, that were recruiting 6-9/210 3-star PF Nnamdi Okongwu from Chino Hills, when I learned that he died over a month ago in a skateboarding accident.

Alas there is some news, According to Corey Evans Eubanks final 3 are Portland, Oregon State, and Gonzaga.
He will take official visits to each
Oregon State next weekend
Gonzaga on the weekend of August 29
Portland on the weekend of September 5
This should be fun and stressful

Re: 2015 Recruiting
That schedule favors GU a little because it's the always exciting weekend GU welcomes new students onto campus before classes begin on Monday....maybe there will be an unseasonably early blizzard.DTLegend wrote:Alas there is some news, According to Corey Evans Eubanks final 3 are Portland, Oregon State, and Gonzaga.

However, at UP all the students and student/athletes will be on board to give Eubanks a very good and realistic picture of life on the Bluff. It's also very, very nice the UP is batting cleanup in the order....Law/Principle of Recency!
OSU begins classes in late September.....

Looking at Drew's comments here - www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/08/drew_eubanks_3-star_recruit_co.html - it might be assumed that he is an Oregon State lean at the moment.

OSU will offer Eubanks the opportunity to play with guys he knows and go up against the best competition on the hardwood and the diamond while still allowing his family to see him compete......a no brainer really.

Re: 2015 Recruiting
I don't know DD, I didn't think it was all that far-fetched to think that Eubanks might go with UP. Proximity to home, maybe a good fit with the coaching staff. At least be didn't go to Spokane.
Reality is that for the Pilots to ascend to a level which sees them be an occasional tournament team - twice a decade, even - they'll have to find a way to beat out Pac-12 schools for the odd recruit here and there. You know that GU, BYU, and SMC are certainly doing that. Would have been nice to see the Pilots come out top for this one but I guess we can put Eubanks in the Kendall Small category and hope for a better outcome next time around.

Re: 2015 Recruiting
Oh, don't get me wrong....I thought the Pilots had a great chance of landing Eubanks at one time as UP was the first school to court him hard, but once OSU came into the picture I believe the opportunity to play BASEBALL for the Beavers was too good an opportunity to pass up. Remember, baseball has really been Eubanks' first love all along. Now that he is developing into a very good basketball player his priorities may change, but he has the potential to be a big league pitcher one day.
Totally agree the Pilots need to land a couple of top level recruits....I think most agree the inability to beat-out GU and Pac-12 schools for recruits, and not poor coaching, has kept UP in the lower half of the conference. Teenage recruits develop a life-long attachment to schools that have great sports success and generate a lot of publicity.....UP's women's soccer team, OSU's baseball team, and UO's football team are examples.....but these programs each had a couple of elite athletes to get them started and then a few more to keep them going.....UP just needs one or two elite players to takeoff, but it's apparently tough to get teenagers to envision that happening at UP.
In the 90's UP had two local players transfer-in from OSU and it really helped turn the program around for a couple of years....one can only hope something like that will happen again.

Re: 2015 Recruiting
The reality is that very few athletes get to play two sport, no matter what the schools promise.
And Basketball will be the sport that pays his scholarship, not baseball, by NCAA bylaws. The revenue sport gets the counting player.
At some point there will be a conflict, and baseball will lose that argument.

Here's the link to Canaan's website for "Inner City Players - ICP"
http://www.innercityplayers.org/art/Basketball_Focus
The last I heard, Ray Ross was the manager of a firm doing marketing for Adidas USA....but that was 10 years ago.
Two more UP grads working with ICP are Damon Hickok, and one of my favorites of all time, Sharrief Metoyer (spelled differently when he was at UP), the former head coach at Long Beach Poly and the guy I was suggesting should be the next DBO at UP.

Jake Spurgeon from Sherwood, OR, committed to Seattle U today. He's a 2015 small forward. Perhaps makes it less likely that Robert Franks from Vancouver, WA, would also pick SU. Could help the Pilots.

3-star PF Drew Eubanks
Word is they all made an official visit to OSU together this last weekend....

Pretty quiet in this thread for the 2015 class still having five open scholarships...so I'll resort to posting the above minor update.

Re: 2015 Recruiting
If David Carr uses a medical redshirt this year and comes back next year, and if Jazz Johnson honors his verbal commitment, that leaves us with four available scholarships for the 2015 class.
Five players will exhaust their eligibility this season: Bailey, Barker, Gerun, Sharp, van der Mars. Johnson takes one of those five scholarships, leaving four more to be filled. I wonder if the coaching staff has already promised one of those four scholarships to Max Livingston for his senior year...
We could really use an upperclassman/graduate center to transfer in for next season, ala Brendan Lane at Pepperdine. That would help balance the scholarship classes, and give us much needed experience in the middle after VDM and Barker graduate.
Looking ahead to the 2016 recruiting class... We only have one scholarship available for that year: the one that will be vacated by Bryce Pressley. And if all goes as planned (which is a big IF), Alec Monson will return from his mission and take that scholarship. This puts the coaches in a tricky position when they are out recruiting 2016 players. At this point, there is a good chance we won't have any 2016 scholarships available.
