2014 Postseason

There are 5 WCC teams in 2014 postseason play:

Gonzaga and BYU (sound familiar?) are in the NCAA Tournament and Pacific, St. Mary’s, and San Diego are in the WNIT.

BYU begins play in Los Angles on Saturday against North Carolina St.  The winner will play either Nebraska or Fresno St. on Monday.

Gonzaga plays in College Station, Texas on Sunday against James Madison.  The winner will play the winner between Texas A&M vs. North Dakota on Tuesday.

In the WNIT Pacific will play at Oregon and Cal Poly will play at San Diego on Thursday.  On Friday Cal State Bakersfield will travel to Moraga to take on St. Mary’s.

Kind of like the men's season, UP beat both San Diego and Pacific, and came darned close to beating St. Mary's.  They never did come close to beating BYU or Gonzaga, however.

In WNIT action today, UO clobbered UOP, 90-63, and USD kept their season alive against Cal Poly, 82-59.

St Mary's wins it WNIT first-round game over Cal-State Bakersfield, 75-68.

In the WCC's first NCAA action today, #12 BYU beat #5 NC State 72-57 in L.A.

Well, that was disappointing.....#6 Gonzaga falls to #11 James Madison in College Station, 72-63.

#12 BYU plays #4 Nebraska on Monday in LA.

With Gonzaga out of the tournament, will GU head coach Kelly Graves get an offer from UO?   I guess we'll find out.

Monday night was pretty good for the WCC teams.  Although SMC lost at UTEP, 76-64, both USD and BYU won their games.

USD advanced to the WNIT final 16 by winning at Montana, 60-57.  USD will play at UW (a winner over UO) tomorrow night.

#12 BYU advanced to the WNCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 2002 with  a 80-76 win over #4 Nebraska.  Unfortunately for the Cougars, they will probably have to go up against the overall #1 team, Connecticut, in their next game.

USD is done for the year after losing to UW in the WNIT, 62-55.

Zero three-pointers and 22 turnovers were the biggest obstacles in an otherwise very good season for the Toreros who finish the year 24-10.

It was a very good game today for 25 minutes before UConn's defense clamped down and BYU went cold resulting in the up-tempo game BYU didn't want.

UConn won 70-51 and now advances to the Elite Eight with a record of 37-0.  BYU goes home as the last WCC women's team standing with an overall record of 28-7.

Interestingly, if BYU had won they would have been scheduled to play next Sunday.....but the NCAA, in a written statement, stated they would rearrange the schedule for BYU if necessary.

Not a surprise. The NCAA bylaws are unambiguous that any schedules have to accommodate teams that won't play on certain days for religious reasons.
