The Pilots lost at San Diego today and are the #10 seed in the WCC Tournament with a record of 2-16 (4-25).

First up for the Pilots in Las Vegas is #7 seed Santa Clara.  The game will start 30 minutes after the end of the noon game on Thursday....around 2:20, or so, and it will be broadcast on BYUtv and streamed TheW.tv.

Remember, there will be a Pilots pregame gathering beginning 90 minutes prior to the game (about 1PM) at the far end of the concourse at the Orleans Arena.  Look for the Purple.

Just about to board SW for our flight to Las Vegas with the women's team and Geezer & Mrs. Geezer.

Everything relaxed for the players, afterall, they are teenagers, for the most part.

Close call, when DD got on the plane I thought he might be the Pilot and we would do strafing runs of the Strip.

Anyway, we are all safe. Here's the door to our suite...

Lots of tears from the graduating seniors after UP's eight point loss to SCU today. The Pilots played well in the second, but they just couldn't figure out how to penetrate SCU's zone in the first.

UP was killed by the team's inability to stop SCU inside....UP was outscored 36-10 in the paint....and UP got NO scoring from the bench while SCU got 24 from its second string.

The Pilots were excellent from the stripe, 24-27, but SCU was pretty much in contol after 4 minutes in the first half and held on in the second half despite being outscored by the Pilots.

After winning only 2 WCC games this season, it looks to be a long climb back to respectability for the Pilots of the future wth so many seniors departing. In yesterday's final game of the season, only 2 points were scored by a player other than a senior.

There are some good recruits coming in, but IMO the women's program is as low as it's been in the 24 years I've been following it.

I'm confident Coach Sorenson will bring the program back, but for we older fans it may not be soon enough!

For those who haven’t paid much attention to WBB this postseason, the WCC has been pretty well represented, and there are still a couple of teams in the mix.

NCAA:
Friday #11 GU beat #6 George Washington, 82-69
Saturday #14 BYU lost to #3 Louisville, 86-53
Today (Sunday) on ESPN2, #11 GU once again pulled the upset, beating #3 OSU in Corvallis.

Next Saturday Gonzaga will take on the winner of tomorrow night’s game between #2 Tennessee and #10 Pittsburg. Fortuitously for GU, the game will be played in Spokane.

WNIT:
Thursday, USD beat Long Beach St. 63-56.
Today, USD lost to UCLA, 63-58
Thursday, Pacific lost to Sacramento St. 87-79, and USF lost to Fresno St. 79-73
Friday St. Mary’s beat Hawaii 92-88 in OT.

Monday SMC will take on Fresno St. in Moraga.

Haven't all GU's games been in Spokane?  Seems like a nice advantage.

Their wins over George Washington and OSU were both in Corvallis.

Spokane is where the regional 3rd round and quarterfinals are being played next weekend.....it just so happens GU is in that region.  cheers

Pretty cool actually that both GU teams have made it to the Sweet 16 ($$$$).....and both BYU team's fans went out in the first round.  (Oh snap, did I just say that out loud!?)

SMC beat Fresno St. today, 83-64, advancing to the Sweet 16 of the WNIT.  They'll play at Sacramento St on Thursday.

Still two WCC women's teams in the post season....

GU will take on #2 Tennessee on ESPN on Saturday at 4PM in the Sweet 16 of the Women's NCAA Tournament.

And then there was one....

SMC beat Sacramento St. on the road last Thursday to reach the final 8 in the WNIT, and will now travel to Pauley Pavilion to take on UCLA Sunday.

#11 seed Gonzaga is finally out of the NCAA Tournament after a very good run to get them to the Sweet 16, but today's loss to #2 Tennessee will probably haunt the seniors for a long time.

With just over 6 minutes left in regulation the Bulldogs were ahead by 17 points, but constant pressure from the Lady Vols created numerous turnovers and missed shots that led to an overtime win for Tennessee.

The collapse was inexplicable in many ways, and many fans, me included, walked away shaking their head at what could have been!

Just as the season ended for WCC men with GU's loss to Duke on Sunday, the WCC women also ended their run with SMC's loss to UCLA, 82-66.

Very good runs for the GU and SMC women this year....I think we can expect more of the same next season....

More on CB from the UP Athletic Department:
Portland women's basketball senior sharpshooter Cassandra Brown, who was among the nation's top three-point shooters this season, was selected to compete at the 27th Annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, which will take place on Thursday in Indianapolis, Ind. The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. (Pacific) at Butler University's historic Hinkle Fieldhouse and will be shown live on ESPN.

"I'm honored to be selected and I can't wait to compete against some of the nation's best shooters," Brown said. "This is an incredible opportunity and I'm thrilled to represent the University of Portland."

Brown hit 44.4 percent of her three's this season, which ranks seventh in the nation and first in the West Coast Conference. She shot 75 of 169 overall from beyond the three-point arc, and her 75 three-pointers are the second most in a single season in Portland women's basketball history. For her career, the native of Vernon, B.C., finishes third all-time at UP with 180 career three-pointers and is fourth with a .393 career three-point percentage.
