WWC 2015
Today is the start of the Women's World Cup. Here are good wishes for Christine and Sophie in their opening game against China. With something like 52,000 fans mostly rooting for Team Canada it should be quite the event for them.

Big win for Canada. Christine scores on a penalty shot in extra time.

Re: WWC 2015
You know, I suppose I'm biased, but it seemed as though Sophie and Sinc were the only real weapons Canada possessed today.
Sinc's foul shot couldn't have been any more accurate....it was magic! The foul seemed obvious to me....(especially after seeing the ridiculous yellow cards that were handed out in Saturday night's Timbers' match.)
Especially Sinc in the box....everyone was marked pretty well by the Chinese, but Sinc's size and speed gave a her a number of separations that her teammates were unable to exploit.
USA vs. Australia....Monday at 4:30 PDT.

Re: WWC 2015
It would have been great for Canada if Sidney Leroux had chosen to play for the country of her birth, alas she did not.
Germany met expectations and clobbered Ivory Coast 10-0 yesterday.

Re: WWC 2015
I was at the Norway vs. Thailand and Germany vs. Côte d'Ivoire games. Both were one-sided affairs and Norway could have easily won by more. Germany looks potent. I wouldn't want to face them at any stage of the Cup. But, it was nice to watch Angerer (Thorns GK) play for her country. Personally, I am rooting for a US-Canada final.

Pretty good first round for the Pilots. Sophie and Megan get FIFA player of the match and Christine gets a game winner to go with Megan's deuce. Pilot teams get 3 points each.

Really, it would have been great?A_Fan wrote:It would have been great for Canada if Sidney Leroux had chosen to play for the country of her birth, alas she did not.
Leroux may have been born in Canada, but she's had dual citizenship since birth (I believe her dad once pitched in MLB), and she made her own decision at age 9 to play for the US.
Let's see, she's won an Olympic Gold Medal for the US and is on the US World Cup team.....I like her right where she is!

Maybe you mis-read the first part of the sentence - "It would have been great for Canada...".
Do you really doubt that statement is true?

Re: WWC 2015
Thanks for settling me down and setting me straight.
I've gotten so tired of the Canadian backlash against Sydney by Canadian soccer fans and her vilification by the Canadian press, that I get very defensive of her
However, from what I saw in the first game against Australia in Winnipeg, that animosity has calmed down to the point the crowd was actually cheering for Sydney instead of booing her. (Of course those fans could have been from the US, I suppose).
So, point taken, Sydney would definitely have helped Canada, but she's belongs to the USA!!

Re: WWC 2015
The booing was just retaliation for all the booing Americans gave Karina leBlanc ( born in Atlanta) for jumping ship.
Or maybe not.

Re: WWC 2015
I saw this review of the match between the USA and Australia:
The thing is, it's on the official Australia football federation website.

The USA, well, they just aren’t that good
The US certainly like to talk a good game. The reality is they play a fairly rudimentary, bog-standard 4-4-2, were short of ideas going forward and outmanoeuvred tactically. ‘Play it long and look for the head of Wambach’ seems the default game-plan for a team stuck in the past.
World football has moved, in case Jill Ellis hasn’t noticed. US were outplayed by a better, smarter footballing side – who were also without two certain starters in Polkinghorne and keeper Williams – before the Aussies ran out of gas.
US relied on the individual brilliance of Megan Rapinoe to win them this game. And Hope Solo in the US goal saved the Americans on numerous occasions in front of a vocal ‘home’ crowd in Canada. If it wasn’t for this world-class keeper, this could’ve been a different result.

Re: WWC 2015
I would have to agree with much of what they say. The USA has some players at midfield who have shown they can be quite creative when playing with their pro teams, but they sure didn't show it in the game with Australia. Looking forward to tonight's match.

Re: WWC 2015
Not sure where else this belongs, but I made sure when I purchased a copy of FIFA 16 that I got the Canadian version with Christine Sinclair on the cover. I feel like I am supporting the Pilots that way. Excited to eventually see how the women's teams in the game shape up.

UGA Pilot - - I, for one, fully appreciate your use of an existing thread. Too many times I've seen multiple threads when one would have been easier to compare posts. Thank you.
