THIS WEEK
• The Pilots visit crosstown rival Portland State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Stott Center and then return to the Chiles Center to host Boise State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
GAME COVERAGE
• Radio coverage for both games will be on the home of the Pilots, 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT) with a 30-minute pregame show. Jason Swygard will call both games this week.
• Online audio simulcasts are available via 910 ESPN-Portland.
• Wednesday's gave will have live video coverage on GoViks.com, while Saturday's game will have full broadcast courtesy of TheW.tv with Travis Demers and Bill Krueger calling the action.
• Live stats for both games will have links available at PortlandPilots.com.
ABOUT PORTLAND STATE
• The Vikings (3-2) have lost a pair of road games to Grand Canyon and Nevada, while posting wins over Texas Rio Grande Valley, Pacific Lutheran and Multnomah.
• A pair of high-major transfers in Cameron Forte (Georgia) and Calaen Robinson (Arizona State) have been immediate contributors this season. Forte leads the Viks in scoring at 22.4 points per game, while Robinson chips in 11.0 per game.
• Benson HS native Bryce White adds 12.0 points, while JC transfer Isaiah Pineiro chips in 9.4 points and 7.6 rebounds.
• Head coach Tyler Geving is in his seventh year at the helm and has led PSU to back-to-back winning seasons. The Viks finished last year 15-14 overall.
• The Vikings are a member of the Big Sky Conference and were picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches poll.
The Pilots head downtown to face the Viks this year; if you remember the game last season at Chiles, the Pilots were absolutely roasting the Viks, until midway through the 2nd half, when Rev started clearing the bench... PSU was able to capitalize, turned up the pressure, and were able to quickly get back in the game until the main Pilot contributors were subbed back in to seal the win. That game still frustrates me!
I feel for Jason Swygard, who will be pressed into action to call the game on the radio broadcast... he has some big shoes to fill.
Once again it appears that the PSU roster is filled with transfers, so it is really difficult to know anything about them, especially with their interesting schedule played to date.
The UP Alumni Office/Portland Chapter is hosting a pre-game social at the Rogue Hall (1717 SW Park Ave) for Alums & friends starting at 5:30pm with hosted appetizers.
GO PILOTS!

Re: Pilots @ PSU, 12/2, 7:00pm
There are conflicting starting times listed for the pregame gathering at Rogue Hall, but I believe it starts at 5PM (not 5:30 as listed on an email from Pilots Athletics).
"Hosted appetizers!" That means FREE FOOD!!
The pundits have PSU favored by 2 points over the Pilots. Let's make sure we get to Rogue Hall and the Stott center and let the Pilot players know they have our support.

Hmm, I noticed the time discrepancy, and figured 5:30p was the safer choice. May head out a little earlier, now.
FYI, ticket was $19, ordered over phone or on-line and delivered via email.

Pay attention to Cameron Forte for PSU. He is a transfer from Georgia. Didn't play too much, but was very good to have off the bench. I imagine he will see more minutes at PSU.

Is that big screen behind the Pilots bench as luminous as it looks on the broadcast?
Looks like the seats behind the right end of the bench are shining with the light of a million suns!

You need tanning lotion. It was actually warm to that side of your body, and I was at the Aisle by the center section.

Haha, I need to see my skin cancer doctor after sitting in front of that screen. Up close, the pixels are a little far apart, too.
Forte may have been a little undersized for the SEC, but he's a good inside player for the mid-major level. Needs to work on his FT form; Pilots did a little hack-a-shaq on him.
Too many turnovers to be comfortable. Pilots need to be more aware of players with quick hands. Several poked away balls, and others where the pass was picked off by a quick reacting defender. But FT shooting was much better tonight (not counting Alec's front end miss near the end). And inside defense was pretty good. Nice win.

Never easy to get a win on the road, so good to see the Pilots calmly pull this one out after giving up what I think was an 11-pt lead at one point.
Wintering was the best player on the floor, as usual, and Jason Todd was huge down the stretch. I see he finished with 14, and I think his only points of the first were on that corner 3 so that would give him 11 second-half points. Nice to see both him and Bryce step up and drill those big FTs late to put it away.

It's the worst thing about the Stott Center in my opinion.

Good, gritty win! That game was rough and tumble, as it usually is in this rivalry. Made me think back to the near-brawl a couple of years ago in the 2013 game at Stott, at the end of the game.
Hartwich and Barreno did well getting some rebounds tonight, and neither was in foul trouble, but my goodness, they cannot be trusted offensively. The point guards obviously don't trust them on the offensive end... avoiding passing to them in the post. They both missed easy layups when they did get the chance.
Wintering put the team on his back in the second half after PSU made its run.
Nice to see us win the free throw battle. Saturday is a chance to make a big step forward for this team...

Re: Pilots @ PSU, 12/2, 7:00pm
I've had lasers shined at me in the sky that hurt less than that bright light (hard to call it a scoreboard since it couldn't be read). Good thing I have an appointment with my ophthalmologist on Friday.
Yea, good and gritty win. Loved seeing Barreno and Hartwitch swatting and rebounding tonight. Philipp's mom was there tonight giving her son encouragement....hope she's also at the BSU game on Saturday.
Jason's play was very solid tonight, but yea, it was Alec who started drawing the fouls and putting up shots inside. It's pretty obvious there is a "first team," for the Pilots, but I really appreciated the way Rev continues to play the entire bench looking for the best combinations and giving everyone experience. Yea, the Pilots let PSU take the lead after being ahead by 11, but everyone played solidly down the stretch to get the win.
Good turnout of Pilots fans tonight....I'm not going to say there was more Purple than green in the stands, but the folks in Purple were certainly more rowdy....
Yep, couldn't help but think how much Bill would have enjoyed this "win by the Purple".....it was good of PSU to offer a moment of silence for him before the tipoff.

Re: Pilots @ PSU, 12/2, 7:00pm
Coach Jackson did a little pre game talk at the Rogue. They thought PSU was going to pound it inside with 3 guys we couldn't match well with with high percentage shots and we'd have to do it from outside.
The difference ended up being we won the points in the paint and free throws.
Phil had his best night. Three blocks ( I think he got more) 11 boards. I just think he needs to get a little more assertive scoring under the basket. He went for lay ups on easy dunks, and if he'd have gone stronger he would have scored or drawn fouls.
But he took their guy Forte out of the game and clogged the middle pretty well and stayed out of foul trouble.

I liked when the band played over the top of the guy announcing the winning numbers for the 50/50 raffle. Neat trick, never have to pay up if the winner can't hear the numbers.

Re: Pilots @ PSU, 12/2, 7:00pm
One takeaway from the game is that the Big Sky refs are every bit as good as the WCC refs.
I'm pretty sure they allowed the bench to call timeouts in the run of play twice,(they pointed to the bench) and the flagrant 1 foul they called is a big stretch of the wording of the rule.
There was no excessive contact or contact above the shoulders( the foul was a reach-in foul at crotch level on a break)
And it was called after review when the opposing coach asked for it at the dead ball.
Thing is, the rule book doesn't provide for a flagrant I call on review, only for a flagrant 2 decision to be made on a flagrant 1 call review. No call, no review.
There was a similar call the other way shortly after, and Rev half heartedly asked for the flagrant and was ignored.

Except one of our Pilots fans, his ears stuffed with cotton to drown out the extraneous noise, heard the announcement, had the winning number, and picked up his winnings.up7587 wrote:I liked when the band played over the top of the guy announcing the winning numbers for the 50/50 raffle. After that he went completely deaf again as he was asked over and over if he was buying drinks after the game...

One thing though, the refs generally let them play! This was a physical, scrappy game, but it was not until Alec started his magic of getting fouled on drives to the hoop that PSU finally started picking up fouls.Geezaldinho wrote:One takeaway from the game is that the Big Sky refs are every bit as good as the WCC refs.
Honestly, I thought it was just too dark for the refs to see the game the way it was being called at times.
Re: the flagrant. Sorry, but NO way was that a flagrant. Not by action or intent....rules or no rules.
