Alec Wintering Named WCC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – University of Portland junior point guard Alec Wintering has been named the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for December 28, 2015. Wintering led the Pilots to a pair of home wins against Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine last week as Portland opened WCC play with a 2-0 record. Wintering averaged 21.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in the two victories.

The Charlotte, N.C. native erupted for a career-high 34 points in Wednesday's 87-79 win over Pepperdine on 11-of-15 shooting from the field as the Pilots led from start-to-finish. He was 3-for-3 from three-point range and 9-for-13 at the foul line. He added four rebounds and three assists in the game. Late in the game Wintering had an answer for every Pepperdine run as he had 12 points in the final 6:35 of regulation.

Against Loyola Marymount, Wintering overcame a pair of early fouls to finish with eight points, three rebounds and six assists in 19 minutes of action. The Pilots routed the Lions by an 87-60 margin, the largest WCC win for the Pilots since a 79-39 defeat of LMU in 2010.

Over the two games, Wintering shot 67 percent from the field, made 3-of-4 three-pointers and 11-of-15 free throws. The 2-0 WCC start is the first since the 2006-07 season.

Wintering, a three-year starter for the Pilots, ranks second in the WCC in steals (1.8 ), fourth in assists (5.9), and sixth in scoring (16.2).

The Charlotte, N.C. native already ranks fifth in school history for assists (397) and is the all-time leader in assists per game (5.3). He also ranks sixth in three-point percentage (.416) and tenth in steals (119).

Portland continues WCC play on the road this week at San Francisco on Thursday at 5 p.m. and Santa Clara on Saturday at 1 p.m.

I think this is the first Pilot to win WCC Player of the Week since Pressley in December 2013. Congrats!

Pressley could have just as easily won the award this week, too. For the LMU and Pepperdine games he averaged 20 points, 2.5 assists and 4 rebounds. He shot 54% from the floor (13-24) and 61% from distance (11-18).

On the coach's radio show tonight, they interviewed Bryce.  He said his dad gave him some advice over the break: "keep shooting".
