Re: 2018 World Cup
Group A: Uruguay and Russia are through, Saudi Arabia and Egypt out.
Group B: Spain and Portugal through, Morocco and Iran out.
Group C: France is through. Denmark likely, especially if France coasts. Australia likely done, Peru out.
Group D: Croatia through. Nigeria, Iceland and Argentina all desperate.
Group E: Costa Rica out. Brazil v Serbia for one spot. Draw favors Brazil. Switzerland moves on with a win, draw or Brazil victory.
Group F: Mexico almost through. Germany has to not fumble a layup vs. So. Korea, and they'll knock Sweden out. Sad blondes everywhere. Could end up a three way tie decided by goal differentials. So. Korea needs miracles.
Group G: England and Belgium through, playing for seeding. Tunisia and Panama out.
Group H: Poland out. Japan through with a win, draw, a Senegal victory, or other complicated permutations. Columbia needs to win, or draw with a Japan loss.
Group D should provide some fun games tomorrow.

Not so fast.
Based on Argentina's sportsmanship (and Maradona's classy behavior), I am temporarily a fan of France.

You mean the France that had Thierry Henry cheat it’s way into qualification against Ireland ( aka Hand of frog) and Had Zinedine Zidane head butt an Italian player?

Meh.
He was just telling some specific Nigerian hecklers the score, along with a assessment on how they self identify. They were heckling him from when Nigeria scored. He responded like any Villa míseria alumn would. He got so excited he got sent to the hospital.
So he skipped the etiquette classes at Harrow. Big deal. What’s the future King’s excuse?
But james Dator and BRIT Gary Leineker were really classy ‘ objectively’commenting on it for some ratings. Old defeats die
Hard.
I guess that means you can’t root for England after Robbie Williams flipped off the entire Luzhniki Stadium and a billion tv viewers.after singing ‘Angels’ at the opening ceremony while mouthing “I did this for free” to the camera.
Did James or Gary say anything about that?

Re: 2018 World Cup
4 of the last 5 champions haven’t made it out of group. The other didn’t get past the quarters. Germany is last in their group.
I suppose this means Löw is gone and there will be a rebuilding. Losing to the 15th and 57th ranked teams in the world is their worst performance ever.

Che?
I offer this video to our happy Argentine friend: Link to celebrations in Argentina.
Haven't been active lately, but have still been lurking. I am loving this World Cup so far (minus the US not being in it).

Close.
Doctor Ernesto Guevara Lynch around the time he got his degree from the University of Buenos Aires. Just a middle class doctor at this point.
He wasn’t El Ché yet.
This is after the motorcycle trip and before he went to Guatemala to minister to peones being massacred by the Dulles CIA and United fruit Co. backed government and being radicalized by the experience.

Re: 2018 World Cup
You know, Geez? I took a class on Latin American Environmental History at UP from Dr. Woodard that covered a lot of the United Fruit Company history. Fascinating course.
I should take the time to declare that I am rooting for the Swiss. Uruguay as a backup, I guess.

Re: 2018 World Cup
Pretty wild game 1 of the knockout round. Tied 1-all at half, Argentina immediately scored to open the 2nd half. France then put in the next three goals, all on shots in the run of play. Argentina had chances, and finally got a late goal in stoppage time. France prevails 4-3.
Up next: Uruguay vs Portugal. Will Suarez bite Ronaldo?

So Schmeichel stopped a penalty kick (why no red card?) in extra time, and then stopped 2 of 5 kicks in the shootout. Good day's work for any goalie. And his team loses when the Croatian goalie stopped 3 in the shootout. Wild.
Plus, I am glad Spain got punished for playing passively. Over 800 passes in regulation, and over 1100 in the game.
The vodka consumption must have peaked in Moscow today.

Re: 2018 World Cup
After watching all the arguing, complaining, rolling on the ground, and poor sportsmanship in the Argentina/France match, I wasn't sure I'd watch anymore World Cup, but as boring as today's games might have been at times, at least they were played with some congeniality.
Doubt Putin will be paying much attention to Trump in Helsinki on 16 July if Russia (apparently the lowest ranked team in the World Cup) is in the final the day before....
