TODAY (Saturday), the men play Seattle Pacific at 4 o'clock, preceded at 2 o'clock by the women playing Western Washington.soccernut99 wrote:Any word on the schedule for this weekend. Update on last weekends games
There's also a game at noon...OSU vs. GU, I think..
Busy day, just about to head over to Joe Etzel Field to watch the Pilots beat BYU!

Anyone have a report for the men's and/or women's games on Saturday? We had a big birthday party and couldn't make them.

The women tied 2-2
The men were down 0-1 at the half when I had to leave for a previously scheduled engagement.
I don’t recall that Benji, Gio, or Rey made appearances.

He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Goalkeeper Nico Campuzano, who spent the past year playing with UD Las Palmas in Spain, has committed the University of Portland men's soccer program, announced head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt.
Prior to his stint with Las Palmas, Campuzano was with FC Barcelona from 2014-16. He also previously spent time with Real Valladolid and Real Racing Club de Santander.

If we've learned one thing about Coach Carlin-Voit, he is an excellent recruiter!

Re: 2018 Season
http://portlandpilots.com/news/2018/5/4/msoc-incoming-recruit-arteaga-named-to-the-u-19-mens-national-team.aspx
Incoming men's soccer freshman Jake Arteaga, who is ranked the No. 9 recruit in the country, has been named to the U.S. U-19 National Team that will travel to Trnava, Slovakia, to participate in 2018 Slovakia Cup, which is scheduled for May 1-12. Arteaga has been a regular in the U.S. Men's National Team system since 2014, and this will be his U-19 debut
Arteaga is part of UP's No. 3 recruiting class, which includes five players (Kelee Cornfield-Saunders U-17's, Alejandro J. Pereira U-17's, Greg Tracey U-18's and U-20's, and Tristan Weber U-17's) with youth national team experience.
In Slovakia, the U.S. has been drawn into Group B with Czech Republic, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, while Azerbaijan, Hungary, Slovakia and Wales make up Group A. All teams will face a fourth opponent in the placement stage, but only the two group winners will vie for Slovakia Cup Champions.

It looks like this is the U-18s not the U-19s.

USA beat Kazakhstan 8-0 this afternoon in their first match.
Lovely little city, Trnava, though not what one would call a hot destination.

Apparently Kris Reaves had a sports hernia when he left UP for FC Dallas. Now, after surgery, he's out "4 to 6 weeks."

Re: 2018 Season
That would have been a goal against even the best of goal keepers, but it was even sweeter against former OSU keeper, Nolan Wirth.
Have to hope fan favorite and two-time Oregon high school player of the year, Gio, will stick around two more years....I think he will.

Re: 2018 Season
Got to see the Friday night PDL game between Portland and TSS. Dixon was MOTM for Portland, causing all kinds of trouble for the TSS defence while playing up front. Unfortunately for Portland they lost that game on an Erik Edwardson goal set up by Eric de Graaf. Gio did not start and played in the second half and aquitted himself well as always.

Re: 2018 Season
The departure of Spencer Myers has been mentioned on here, but it looks like we didn't lose just one outside back, we lost both starters from last season. Eric de Graaf is not listed on the roster for 2018. Can someone confirm?

As you probably know, NCAA D1 soccer has only 9.9 scholarships to spread amongst 11 starters, and at UP, approximately 16 more players....meaning there is very little money to go around, and many players get zero or very little athletic scholarship money.
I believe Eric was one of those was paying quite a bit to go to UP, and after two years on the Bluff he has now moved back home to Surrey to live with his parents and play at Simon Frasier where the cost is FREE, or pretty close to it.

Re: 2018 Season
Last season there were 30 student-athletes on the roster, this year there are 27 players sharing the 9.9 scholarships, but we're going to need programs to figure out who some of the players are.DoubleDipper wrote:As you probably know, NCAA D1 soccer has only 9.9 scholarships to spread amongst 11 starters, and at UP, approximately 16 more players....meaning there is very little money to go around, and many players get zero or very little athletic scholarship money.
The team lost eight players to graduation and I believe seven players have left the team before graduating (Gunhus, Gorton, Baez, Van Eynde, Defreitas-Hansen, Myers, and de Graaf.
If my math is close to correct, that means there are 15 returning players and 12 new guys on the 2018 roster. It will be interesting to see how each will contribute to the team.

Re: 2018 Season
I think the days of seeing big graduating classes from the men is over. You will see more and more leaving early as the promises made to them in recruiting cannot be kept. Need room for the next top recruiting class.

Umm.. can you tell us which of the last 10 years graduated all its original freshman class players?

Re: 2018 Season
United Soccer Coaches has released its preseason Top 25, and although the Pilots didn't make the list, they did receive enough votes to be #31, while UOP is #35 and USF is tied for #43.

Re: 2018 Season
Most of us have only occasionally seen walk-on redshirt senior goalkeeper Kienan Weekes in goal for the Pilots because he came to UP at the same time as All-WCC GK Paul Christensen, now with the Atlanta Union.
But Kienan's coaches and teammates are well aware of the great contributions he has made to the team behind the scenes, and yesterday Coach Nick surprised Kienan by awarding he and his dad (his mom passed away a few years back) a full-ride scholarship for his final season at UP.
Enjoy the video:
