2019 Player Departures
The graduation celebrations before the SCU game raised some questions. On his radio show, Terry Porter was asked about the four players leaving, and said something like discussions were underway. I guess it is now settled. Portland Men's Basketball just tweeted this out:
All of them struggled to contribute this year. But the one thing we can say for sure about next year is that we'll be young, again.
It was accompanied by pictures of Josh, Franklin, Xavier and Crisshawn. So all the academic seniors who are juniors in eligibility are leaving.@PilotHoops wrote:As the team gears up to play San Diego in the first round of the @WCChoops tournament tomorrow, these Pilot seniors are getting ready to play their final tourney in a Pilot uniform. We miss them already.

Didn't UP do this same thing with John Bailey a few years back? He was a redshirt junior in terms of athletic eligibility, but then all of a sudden mid-season he started being referred to as a senior and was honored on senior day. Something like that...

Re: 2019 Player Departures
Crisshawn tells me he definitely wants to play another year of college ball to prepare him to play professionally, but he "hasn't had time to really think about next season yet."
My guess is he'll look around at possibilities elsewhere and will not find another school that will afford him the playing time and leadership role that he'll get at UP.
Whether that translates into him staying at UP is anyone's guess, but if he were to leave he'd be taking with him the leadership this young Pilots team sorely needs.

Re: 2019 Player Departures
The rumor is Franklin will grad-transfer (as a walk-on) to Alabama to play for long-time NBA player and two-time NBA coach, Avery Johnson.
Heck, who wouldn't want to spend some time watching Alabama football and play in front of rabid home and away fans in the SEC?
I imagine if Franklin's dad and Johnson didn't play together, they competed against each other many times...

You have got to be kidding. He has now gone from a player on a 5-24 D1 team to a 17-14 SEC team?

Hmm, if true, seems like a positive move to me, and great opportunity for Franklin.

Going from UP to any D1 program would be a positive move. But him getting any consistent playing time at Alabama? I doubt it.

Re: 2019 Player Departures
If he is a walk-on, playing time will be nil. But it would still be a good experience. And a culture shift.

No indication from this of where he is going, but if it is Alabama, what a great opportunity to get a taste of the SEC sports and party life...and a graduate degree too. #jealousJeff Goodman wrote:Portland’s Franklin Porter will be a grad transfer, his father/coach Terry Porter told @Stadium. I'm a little surprised that we haven't heard about other players by now. Does that mean that we aren't going to have as much turnover as some of us had worried?

It wears off pretty quickly when you realize your school's donor base would rather front $50 million for a football practice facility than $50 for research that could improve lives. But, that is grad school life.
If true: both he and Jazz will have improved themselves through Pilot basketball in some form.

That's blasphemy in the South. You better not talk like that when at your local watering hole.[/quote]

Last I heard, Alabama may be a contender, but Franklin has a "list of schools" that he's looking at for grad school and a year of basketball...no decision has been made.

One or two or more players may eventually transfer, but in my brief conversation with a couple of UP's "underclassmen guards" a month or so ago, both seemed committed to staying at UP, and at the time, neither wanted to contemplate sitting out a year due to transfer rules....
With Franklin's departure, and the two inbound high school recruits who have signed, all 13 scholarships are currently spoken for, including those currently held by Josh and Crisshawn. Josh will likely depart, but Crisshawn's plans are still unknown. If the staff wants to bring in more experience through transfer or JUCO as they've said, some space is going to have to be cleared.

UP should go the grad transfer route. They would be immediately eligible, experienced and would be gone after the one season.

Verbal Commits has 159 players on their list so far. https://verbalcommits.com/transfers/ It includes long known, like Rashad Jackson and KJ Feagin, and new ones like Franklin and Jahshire Hardnett from BYU.

Based upon past years, their are probably another 440 to go. And with the new, more relaxed, transfer rules, there might be even more...up7587 wrote:DoubleDipper wrote:It's still early!

Alabama might not be an option now that the coach isn't returning.

$8 million buyout in his contract, or about 16 years of a Terry Porter contract.

Yeah, I would have to say Franklin no longer has the "personal connection" with Alabama that was between TP and Avery Johnson.Geezaldinho wrote:$8 million buyout in his contract, or about 16 years of a Terry Porter contract.

Re: 2019 Player Departures
Yeah, despite Crisshawn looking forward to playing another year at UP, the coaches apparently wanted to go another direction...Dean Murdoch wrote:Crisshawn Clark, 6-4, 205, G, Grad, Portland
Franklin Porter, 6-3, 185, G, Grad, Portland
Rashad Jackson, 6-4, G, Grad, Portland
Crisshawn is now listed on Goodman's list of transfers.
Rashad says he's been offered by PSU, and likes the opportunity of staying around friends and family in Portland (his brother is a coach at Lewis & Clark), but he's still looking at other opportunities.
It would be just like "old times" to see a trio of former Pilots playing on the Park Blocks....
