Re: 2020 Season
The unstoppable PK and the one touch goal off a cross got Taryn Ries her the second WCC player of the week of this young season. ( highlights above)

Her first POW was against the Beavers. We need to find more teams that feature orange in their kits.

Re: 2020 Season
A spirited, fast paced game today, even at the 110 minute mark, but the Pilots should feel fortunate to come away with a point...too many wasted relatvely easy chances for USF.

Re: 2020 Season
Lost in the sports shuffle was UP going another 110 minutes against #25 Pepperdine for another scoreless draw. The defense looked strong, now not allowing a goal in over 310 minutes with Madison Zamora in goal, the midfield outplayed the waves, and UP had more chances from inside the 18 yard box.
Alas, they could not put one away.
The big event of the day for me was getting to be a Guinean pig for the fan attendance experiment, with a sparse crowd showing limited fan participation is safely possible.

Re: 2020 Season
That was more like it!
Another shutout, but this time the Pilots scored 3 over USD on the road.
I don't even recall hearing freshman Nedya Sawan's name this season, and then she scored a wonderful early goal and another in the second half, both from difficult angles.
It was tough to see (I was also watching golf and basketball), but I think it was MJ Roe who tapped in the Pilots third goal during a scramble.
Now 2-2-2 in WCC play, the Pilots stay on the road next at GU next Saturday.

Re: 2020 Season
Sawan has played quite a bit in earlier games. She can play as a hold up type back-to-the goal forward, but played a little more wide open yesterday.
Her first goal was an in-bending cross that went in at the far post. Her second was a great far post shot.

Re: 2020 Season
After the 2002 championship game Christine was asked if her goal from the wing was a shot or a cross. Her response was
“It went in, didn’t it?”

Congrats to Madison Zamora for getting the WCC defensive player of the week award. Though her fourth shutout in a row has been a defensive team effort, it’s nice to see her get some well earned recognition.
This week’s effort marked 400 straight shutout minutes for a perfect sheet for the season.

Has anyone heard anything about Taryn? When she was helped off the field it didn't look good.

Re: 2020 Season
Congrats to Madison Zamora for getting the WCC defensive player for the second week in a row. Playing behind a strong defensive back line, she hasn’t been scored on in 510 minutes in the net, which must be close to a UP record.
Her perfect .000 scored up upon season so far certainly is.

Re: 2020 Season
Lately, I have been wondering if the days where a small school like UP could win it all in women’s soccer were far gone, but our rivals Santa Clara have found themselves in the NCAA title game this year. Way to represent the WCC!

And, Santa Clara has done it! They beat Florida State in penalty kicks to claim their second national championship. Congrats to them!
Now, it’s time that we return to the top too!

Re: 2020 Season
I admit to knowing little about soccer except I like watching it...and tonight's game was special to watch when the #11 Broncos, seemingly dead and dead-tired and down by one with under 7 minutes to play, came back taking advantage of a weak backward pass by #1 and undefeated FSU with a 1 on 3 goal from SCU's star, Kelsey Turnbow.
No one likes PKs, but when your team wins, they are fun when it is finally over...
I'm not sure which was more fun, watching the game or watching the SCU soccer alums and fans in the stands making much more noise than the FSU faithful. Somehow I can believe Aly Wagner is now 40, but I cannot believe Brandi Chastain is now 52, and Top Gun was released 35 years ago...
FloridaPilot is correct, it is now time for UP to get back to the title game, after all it was 19 years ago that the Pilots beat SCU on PKs to win its second National Championship.

In 2002, they beat Santa Clara in the championship game for their first National Championship, 2-1. It was in the second overtime that they scored their second goal, no need for PKs. Christine scored both goals.
In 2005, they won their second championship. In the semi-finals, they went to PKs in a 0-0 game with Penn State. Christine scored the deciding PK. In the finals, the Pilots torched UCLA, 4-0. Angie Woznuk (now Kerr) scored the first goal, Christine scored the next two, and Megan Rapinoe scored the last one.
In the 2005 semi-final game, both the Pilots and Penn State were undefeated going into the game. I consider their game to have been one of the best NCAA Tournament games of all time.
In 2005, in the quarters, the Pilots played Notre Dame at Merlo. The game sold out in 7 minutes. The Pilots won 3-1.

Well geeze. F14’s were retired 15 years ago, a year after our second championship.

Don't want to drag this too far off-topic, but someone just uploaded the entire 2005 championship game to YouTube. Great for those who never got to personally experience the "glory days" per se, since full game footage seem to be really lacking outside of probably the UP archives.
