Cyprian Hyde Commitment Q&A
https://www.prospectiveinsight.com/post/cyprian-hyde-commitment
https://www.prospectiveinsight.com/post/cyprian-hyde-commitment
PI: Congratulations! What were the factors that led you to choosing UP?
CH: What has really stood out to me was coach Shantay Legans offered me at another school (Eastern Washington), then he went to University of Portland. Even with them being in a better conference, he stuck with me all the way and always believed in me. I really like the school, it seems like the perfect fit for me. I like their culture, plus the players and staff are awesome. University of Portland has always been good to me, that is why.
PI: What kind of player is Portland getting in Cyprian Hyde? Have the coaches defined a role for you?
CH: We have not gotten that far in terms of a particular role. When I get there I am going to focus on rebounding, playing hard and just giving my all.
PI: Did you have a chance to get to know some of your future teammates throughout the process?
CH: I have gotten to know their names a little bit, but have not gotten to know them too well, yet. They seem like really cool guys and I’m looking forward to getting to know them more.
PI: What is University of Portland getting outside of basketball? Have any major you are leaning towards?
CH: Leaning towards majoring in criminology, that sparks a big interest for me. Still have time and we will see.
PI: What are some of the things you are going to work on to be ready for WCC basketball?
CH: Going to work on getting bigger, need to get faster to play at that level and going to work on the fundamentals.
PI: What is your message to the University of Portland who are hyped for you to join their community?
CH: It’s going to be fun. I’m going to play hard, hit some threes and get a lot of rebounds — we are in for a fun time at the Chiles Center!

Re: 2023 Recruiting
Nothing new about Hyde here, but had to at least give the author of the article some hits...

Early NLI signing runs November 10 - 17, the Pilots are looking to sign Cyprian Hyde and one other.
Exciting time on The Bluff to see kids want to come to UP.

This is a really well-done commitment video! I like it.
Looks like he had offers from a large handful of very respected coaches on the West Coast.

Re: 2023 Recruiting
Brewster is not an easy place to get to as it is close to the Canadian border in Eastern Washington, but the Gebbers family and farm is well known in the region. Coach Legans began recruiting Gebbers when he was at EWU.up7587 wrote:Retweeted by UP MBB@PrepHoopsWA wrote:Brewster’s Kelson Gebbers officially commits to the University of Portland.

Coach Legans is very high on this kid even though Brewster HS is only a 2B school, as I recall. It would not surprise me if Kelson will be a preferred walk-on with a chance at a scholarship later. I was told he scored 30 points in his first game this season.

Re: 2023 Recruiting
A 6-8/235 wing from Australia of Fijian descent, Buru (that is apparently what he goes by) is playing his first year of ball at Garden City Community College in Kansas.
From his tape, he appears the kind of guy UP needs...similar in some respects to Chika, but with more height and weight. (No one can match Chika's attitude, IMO).
This is just a guess, but I believe he was late getting to Garden City last season and redshirted, so it could be his required two years there will be fulfilled in June and he'd be eligible to play at the D1 level in the fall...again, just a guess after rooting around a bit.
Buru has at least eight known offers from D1 schools, but so far, UP is the only school on the west coast with an offer.
Buru is #12. (You've got to love the put-backs at the 1 and 3-minute marks).

A guy like Buru would be a huge get for UP. He would help diversify the scoring, make the defense respect our inside game, which would afford us more 3-point opportunities as well as slashes to the basket.

Re: 2023 Recruiting
Where will all these 2023 scholarships come from?
As far as I can tell from reviewing the current roster, we only have two players who will be out of eligibility after this season: Perry and St. Pierre.
There are already three guys committed (Hyde, Delano, Gebbers), and we're still putting out offers (e.g. Buru).
I know that roster turnover is now the norm in college basketball, but I don't think the coaches would still be extending offers and accepting commitments if they didn't know for sure that there would be roster spots available. Does that mean there are other departures that the coaches know about that are expected after this season?

This is the new world of the transfer portal. Players can use it to move to a new situation. Coaches can use it too, to "encourage" a player to transfer, in order to manage their roster. The Oregon football team, for example, currently projects at 92 scholarship players for the Fall; the limit is 85. So far 22 players have entered the portal, and 10 players have transferred in. And the team is still recruiting. There will be more departures.
In college basketball in 2020 and 2021, 29% of transfer athletes are classified as Active, meaning they may still be exploring transfer options, may have transferred to a non-NCAA school, or may have left the sport. They didn't all give up their scholarship willingly.

There is also the possibility that some commits may be walk-ons...just as Chika, Coleman, Drew, Andrew, and Jarrett are.

Re: 2023 Recruiting
Updates on the two JUCO players the Pilots offered a month and a half ago. Buru is interesting, 6-8/220 and averaged a double-double at Garden City (14.8 PPG, 10.2 RPG). Meithof is the top scorer on the top JUCO team in the country.
Buru Naivalurua
• 6-8 forward from Sydney, Australia playing at Garden City CC in Kansas.
• Ranked #29 on jucorecruiting.com's top 100 for 2023
• Offers from Iona, Hawaii, Southern Indiana, Cal State Fullerton, Tulsa, St. Bonaventure, Sacramento State since the Pilots offer was reported.
• Top five offers by Kenpom: 76 Iona, 117 Fullerton, 125 Hawaii, 152 Portland, 158 Tarleton State.
• Doesn't appear to have trimmed offer list yet.
Nate Meithof
• 6-5 guard from Keizer, Oregon playing at College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.
• Ranked #35 on jucorecruiting.com's top 100 for 2023.
• Offers from Drake and Long Island since the Pilots offer was reported.
• Top five offers by Kenpom: 64 Drake, 79 Utah Valley, 108 UC Santa Barbara, 152 Portland, 221 Florida International.
• Doesn't appear to have trimmed offer list yet.
