If the Western US is like Puerto Rico, there will be a lot more COVID cases and a lot more game postponements and cancellations.

I am in PR helping with another reconstruction project, and as of today travelers must have a negative COVID test within 48 hours of landing here...problem is, many of our volunteers are having difficulty finding testing sites and PR won't accept results of home test kits.

All of our volunteers are fully vaccinated/boosted, but I have been told unvaccinated visitors to PR must quarantine for 10 days even if they test negative.

Gonzaga has put their team on a COVID pause and they are now not scheduled to play a game until they come to the Chiles Center on January 6 at 7pm.

GU last played on December 21 when they blew out EWU, 76-48, and they were supposed to play USF and LMU this week.

As reported yesterday, UP will not be playing at LMU due to COVID concerns within the LMU program, and this morning it was announced that San Diego is also paused and has postponed its games with BYU and Pacific.

As of now, UP is still scheduled to play at BYU at 1pm PST on Jan 1 in what will be the first WCC game for both teams.

UPDATE: Gonzaga, San Diego, Pacific, and LMU are now on a pause...

Further UPDATE:  Gonzaga, San Diego, Pacific, LMU, Portland, Pepperdine, and Santa Clara are now paused IAW COVID protocol. The only teams not paused are BYU, USF, and SMC.

All WCC games scheduled for today and Saturday have been postponed...the first scheduled games for all 10 schools is now Thursday January 6, including GU at UP at 7pm, televised locally on the CW.

.@lmulionswb and @PortlandWBB have agreed to move the Dec. 30 postponed contest in LA to Feb. 7 in Portland. LMU and Portland will now meet twice in the Rose City during the first week of February.

As of an hour ago, the game against Gonzaga in the Chiles Center at 7pm on Thursday is still on...however, UP's game in Moraga on Saturday has been postponed.

Finally, GAMEDAY!

Barring a final-hour change, the Pilots will play their first WCC game of the season tonight at 7pm in the Chiles Center against Gonzaga.  The game will be televised on the CW with Ann Schatz at the mic.

UP was blown-out twice last season by the Bulldogs and UP has only beaten GU once in their last 10 meetings, but it was a memorable 1-point victory in the semi-final during the Pilots magical run to the WCC Tournament title in 2020.

GU is favored in tonight's game, but as neither squad has played in over two weeks and practices have been limited due to COVID protocols, this could be a wild one.

Reminder, all youths 18 and under will be admitted to tonight's game FREE after obtaining a ticket from the Pilots box office.

The previously postponed game in Moraga is now scheduled for Monday February 21 at 2 o'clock.

The Pilots will play at Santa Clara on Saturday the 19th and remain in the Bay Area for the St. Mary's game on Monday.

Currently, the only postponed game that has not been rescheduled is in Provo against BYU.  While most makeup games are being played on Monday, BYU seems reluctant to play on Mondays as the men have also been unable to come up with a makeup date to play BYU in Portland.

In case you haven't already heard, none of the concession stands will be open for tonight's game or Saturday's game against Pacific.

As most know, the concession workers are students...

I was told fans are NOT allowed to bring food into the Chiles Center, but they can bring non-alcoholic beverages.

Any volunteers to check the beverages for alcohol?

I check mine out on the way to the game.

Struggled for most part of 3 quarters down by 14 late in the 3rd. Scoring 5 points in the 2nd with shooting30%fg at the half and 13% from 3 got them in a hole.

But pulled it back to 9 at the final break after a switch to man D. Kept playing man and inside shots dropped in the 4th to fight back for a 5 point win!

Yeah, all you need is one good quarter, especially if it's the fourth. We figured they were on track to lose by 20 in the third, but it did make for an exciting 4th quarter. Seemed like Alex was getting brutalized underneath, but the only calls they made were against her.

It was obvious that USF was going after Alex, and they beat her pretty good.  The 3-second violation she incurred was almost laughable when #12 had her wrapped-up so tightly she could not move out of the lane.

However, I think Alex got the benefit of the one ref overruling the other on her scoop shot that was ruled continuation for the "and 1" play.

Phew!! That was a tough one, but I think you can credit those anemic numbers and the inability of the Pilots to get going on the very large and physical USF team with a long bench.  I think it was the best defense we’ve seen against the Pilots this season.

Some Pilots may have put up bigger numbers than others tonight, but this was a TEAM effort. I am not even going to look at the stats because there were just so many good things done by everyone tonight that will not show up on the stat sheet.  

Good to have Lucy and Keeley back on the court, but MJ and Emily were nowhere to be seen.

I spoke with Kelsey at halftime, and she says she is done for the year because of an injury.  But on the positive side of her injury, it appears she is going to be eligible for a medical "redshirt" year, so could end up with 6 years of eligibility (counting her extra COVID year), enough to get her master's degree!!

Fun Fact:  Of the 10 starters on the floor tonight, 9 were international players...only Maddie was born in the USA.

Next up Pacific at 2pm on Saturday in the Chiles Center.

Impressed as we were at UP's comeback win over USF, the NET was not, and dropped the Pilots from #59 to #66.

If UP does not win the WCC Tournament, they will likely have to be somewhere in the NET top 35 to go to the Dance.

I have been told today's game against Pacific is OFF!!

A "couple of positives" came back for the Tigers team this morning...

Still awaiting "official" confirmation.
