The high points were 26 points from Fowler, 19 from Maddie Muhlheim, 16 points an 5 assists from Rose, and 10 from Burnham.
Lucy got 6 points and four blocks, and disrupted more shots.
UP shot 51% from the field , 50% from three (12/24) , and 17/22 from the stripe.
St Mary’s was only slightly worse and the game was decided at the end by the UP press, which held the Gaels scoreless from the field in the last 5:05.
And only 12 turnovers.

San Diego 61 - Portland 53
San Diego sucked for 3 quarters. Portland outlasted them and sucked the entire game. 0 for 19 on 3's, 27% on field goals, 20 turnovers. Hard to watch. Must be painful to players. Four losses in five games. We have several injuries, but one wonders if there is a plan B afoot, cause this ain't workin'.

The women are still #4 in the standings, but only a half game ahead of SCU and SMC. They play #8 Pepperdine, and need a win.

Went to game. Lasted until half time. Errant (polite) passing.
Who is calling the signals? The team seemed totally uncoordinated.
Will try tomorrow at noon and hope for better.
I know how frustrated they must be.

If they are frustrated, they worked it out on the Waves, winning 85-49. 19 points by Fowler, 17 points by Pflug, nine players scoring. Hit 10-21 3's, 47.6%. 25 assists on 31 baskets. Only 14 turnovers against 20 steals.
29 to 9 first quarter, and 25 to 7 4th quarter. 13 - 0 start in first 3 minutes of game. Strong start, strong finish. Never in doubt.

Re: 2022 WCC Season/Games
Besides the decisive win, it was great to see this game was a career high for Rose. Near the end of the game Meek put Rose and Maddie in for their "senior exits." Maddie nailed one last three at the top of the key, got fouled, and made it a four point play before leaving. It was wonderful to watch those two play and heart-warming to see the reception they got from the bench when they exited. And of course, Lucy broke the record for most blocks in a season. Not a bad day.

Not being at the game, I found it is on YouTube. I watched the first and fourth quarters, and saw what you describe. The announcers mentioned the irony of Rose transferring from Pepperdine and playing the Waves for her last home game. And Rose and Maddie playing together in high school and finishing together at UP.

BYU has three starters on the All-WCC First Team, and the BYU coach is the Coach of the Year:
Seems obvious that a key to being a successful coach is to have really, really good players.

Re: 2022 WCC Season/Games
4. PORTLAND (18-9, 8-6)
Tournament debut: Saturday quarterfinals vs. TBD, 1:30 p.m.
The skinny: The Pilots are 4-5 since losing star senior point guard Haylee Andrews to a season-ending knee injury. But with their win over Pepperdine on Saturday they secured the No. 4 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals. Two-time all-conference forward Alex Fowler has amped up her game and is averaging 18.4 points on 59-percent shooting over the past 14 games. Lucy Cochrane (8.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.0 blocks) has also been a steady contributor.
Who’s hot: Redshirt junior Rose Pflug took over Andrews’ spot after she was injured during Portland’s win over eventual WCC champ BYU and has averaged 11.4 points and 3.5 assists the past 10 games. She was scoring at just a 4.8 clip through the team’s first 17 outings.
Key stat: Portland has created an enviable balance, ranking second in the WCC in scoring (71.9) and third in scoring defense (62.3).
Title chances: Without floor leader Andrews (11.3 points, 5.7 assists, 2.0 steals), the hero of the team’s 2020 WCC Tournament title run, the Pilots’ path to a championship this year is far tougher.

WCC Tournament
The Pilots, with the fresher legs, should be heavily favored today at 1:30 in a quarterfinal game against LMU.
#9 LMU and #4 UP split the regular season series played in Portland with one day of rest in between.
LMU (11-18/4-13) beat UP (18-9/8-7) in the Saturday game by outscoring the Pilots 39-25 in the second half after UP spent their energy by beating nationally ranked BYU two days prior.
In the Monday game, UP rebounded by beating the Lions by coming out fast and hanging on in the second half.
So far in the Tournament, #9 LMU beat #8 PU 64-54 on Thursday and they beat #5 SMC on Friday, 71-64.
Pilots by at least 20 points against the weary Lions would be my guess.
As many will recall, LMU is coached by USC grad Aairka Huges, who starred for Coach Mike Meek at
Southridge High School in Beaverton.

Re: 2022 WCC Season/Games
Alex Fowler was clearly frustrated in the first half about not getting calls under the rim, and also frustrated with herself about missing a wide open layup. But she finished with 17 points from 4 baskets and 9 free throws. Maisie Burnham got 18 points off the bench on 7-12 shooting and 4 FTs. She was aggressive driving to the basket whenever she had the opportunity. The Pilots held LMU's star Ariel Johnson to 10 points after she averaged 17 against them in the regular season games.
15 turnovers needs to be cleaned up for BYU, and they need to do better than 2-12 on 3P shots. Playing BYU on Monday.

Yeah, the Pilots have gone 0-17 on two occasions this year, so shooting can be a problem, but now that they've seen the sight lines in the Orleans, Monday should/better be better.up7587 wrote:15 turnovers needs to be cleaned up for BYU, and they need to do better than 2-12 on 3P shots. 15 turnovers is probably just about average on the season, but it is just part of the quick flow and tight passes the team uses. Today, 6 of the turnovers were in the first quarter when the team was just beginning "live" play after a week off.
And there are turnovers, and then there are turnovers...today LMU scored just 4 points off UP turnovers, but the Pilots scored 22 points after forcing LMU into 20 turnovers.
It is for sure that #4 UP (19-9) has got to do better behind the arc and at the line if they are to beat the #1 Cougars (25-2) for the second time this season.
Haylee was supposed to have surgery last Monday and was not with the team today, and MJ and Kelsey are also done for the season with injuries. The bench is short, and BYU will be all over Alex, so someone is going to have take over like Maisie did today.

GAMEDAY!!
UP vs. #17 BYU @ noon (what's that, 4am on Tuesday in Perth?) in the Orleans Arena.
Checking around, the pundits are giving the Pilots next to ZERO chance of beating the nationally ranked #17 Cougars for the second time this season.
UP's NET is 77 and BYU's NET is 9.
BYU has lost only two games this entire season, to Oklahoma on December 10, and to Portland on February 3, the game in which Haylee was injured and Rose brought the team back from the brink to win 75-64.
The game is of course streamed on the WCC Network and is televised on BYUtv and ROOT Sports NW in the Portland area.
