Severe Weather in Spokane--Pilots able to land?
I have been watching the huge snow storm in Spokane... and it looks like there are some significant issues at the Spokane airport... this will very likely effect the Pilots arrival in Spokane today for tomorrow night's game.
The GU Board is saying that the local news in Spokane reported that the UP team was set to arrive at 4:30pm. Also, a Southwest Airlines plane from Portland slid off the end of the runway (thankfully nothing serious). Looking at the weather there, it doesnt look good for further landings... This isnt good at all.
It sounds like the airport may indeed be closed.
I will try to keep tabs on this... it is snowing like crazy in Spokane.

Any word on the team yet? If the weather keeps up, might the game be cancelled/postponed?

Re: Severe Weather in Spokane--Pilots able to land?
The GU board is saying that the Spokane news says their flight was cancelled, and that the team will try again in the morning. It looks like the Spokane airport is/was completely closed most of the afternoon.
The Spokane weather says that they are due for another round of snow in the early morning... so they may have difficulties tomorrow morning.
I would assume that if the team cant get out by mid morning the game will be postponed. I would guess they would try to play on Tuesday night...? Dang, that starts cutting into preparations for the next weekend road trip.
Didnt we have to postpone a road game a couple years ago because PDX was closed/iced in? I think a game in CA was delayed a day or 2 because the team had to drive to SeaTac to fly south...

Both teams only play one game the weekend of Feb. 25th
I suppose they could do a home-home weekend like we used to...

It looks like the earliest flights to Spokane on Monday leave at around 8am... and it could be a weather mess here, too... ugh. I dont like this... hopefully the guys get a good night's sleep tonight!

Re: Severe Weather in Spokane--Pilots able to land?
Heard their flight is already delayed an hour... they were trying to get on an 8 AM flight.
I wonder what the cut-off point will be for cancelling the game? We probably need to get up there at least 3 or 4 hours early, right? So that would mean maybe a noon flight at the latest? I really don't know...

Re: Severe Weather in Spokane--Pilots able to land?
The Southwest flight finally left PDX and is scheduled to arrive in Spokane at 10:40am. So, they should still get a decent shoot around today.

Update
From the Spokesman Review website:
Portland sports information director Jason Brough said the University of Portland men's basketball team is at the Portland airport and hoping to board a flight for Spokane around 10 a.m.
They were scheduled to be on the 8:10 a.m. flight, but it was delayed. Brough thought that the plane had just arrived at the Portland airport and he didn't anticipate further problems.
The Pilots were supposed to fly from Portland on Sunday at 3:30, but it was delayed because of the snowstorm that blanketed the Inland Northwest. By 6 p.m., the team was told to head back to campus and try again in the morning.
If their flight goes as expected, they should be on the ground in Spokane by 11 or so, which would probably alter their pre-game scehdule, but wouldn't pose a problem for tonight's tipoff at 5.

Re: Severe Weather in Spokane--Pilots able to land?
As much as I don't want to think so, I have to believe that this is about the worst possible scenario the team could have encountered - especially for our freshmen who've never played in Spokompton before.

Re: Severe Weather in Spokane--Pilots able to land?
I'm not so sure its that bad... probably a shorter night's sleep than they wanted, but it is better than a case of food poisoning, or something. It is also good to get the game played tonight, so as to not cut into the prep time for Saturdays game @ SMC.
Maybe the shake-up/change of pregame routine will end up being a good thing. (I am trying to find the positive here...)
BTW, Southwest Airlines is showing the flight as "Arrived" in Spokane, so they made it.
Game On! Gooooooooo Pilots!
