Re: 2022-23 Around the NCAA
Another BIG for GU as 6-9/255 Graham Ike, a transfer from Wyoming, commits to the Bulldogs.
I believe Ike sat out this past season but averaged close to a double-double the previous year with 19+ points per game and 9+ rebounds.
Ike has 2 years of eligibility...
Note to fellow PN contributors: If UP is to get players like Graham Ike we, the UP community, are going to have to help by contributing and recruiting to the collective that Stonehouse has established. There will be more about this in the coming weeks...

To no ones surprise, except perhaps the GU fans who were complaining that Arizona was tampering , sophomore point guard Ryan Nembhard has transferred to GU from Creighton.

A source told me Kaden Perry from Battle Ground will be returning to Gonzaga. Hope he gets playing time as there are others in front of him including Ben Gregg from Oregon.

Highly regarded coach, Matt Logie, who many were touting as the next UP coach before Legs was hired, is the new head coach at Montana St.
Logie comes to Montana State after four seasons at Point Loma in California, where his teams rolled up an 82-23 record with three conference championships. His 12 seasons as a head basketball coach includes eight at Whitworth University in Spokane (2011-19). His Pirates compiled a 194-35 record, and his 276-58 career mark in 12 seasons is good for an .826 winning percentage, third-best among active coaches at four-year schools.
Among Logie's assistants is former USD head coach, Sam Scholl.

Re: 2022-23 Around the NCAA
Those of you keeping an eye on the transfer portal have probably noticed how many very talented and experienced big men have entered their names there late in the process.
Do you suppose they are being contacted by the coaching staffs from other universities and being offered "incentives" to transfer?
It's not legal, but I have spoken to two players that have had this happen.

Reid ends up at Wake Forest. At least he didn't transfer within the conference.

Re: 2022-23 Around the NCAA
WSU coach Kyle Smith talked about NIL on a Seattle radio, and John Canzano reported on it.
https://www.johncanzano.com/p/canzano-price-for-fielding-a-winner
The market is off the rails. Radio co-host Jason Puckett asked the WSU basketball coach how much it would take to field a competitive Pac-12 Conference men’s basketball team. Smith paused, admitted he isn’t supposed to know, then answered.
“A million to a million five,” he said. “That would be a top-60 team.”
There’s no salary cap. Boosters are essentially buying players for their favorite schools. NCAA president Charlie Baker is scrambling about, trying to figure out where guardrails might be applied. To compound matters, agents have followed the trail of money.
Smith shared a story during the interview about a player who told him that an agent had helped engineer a NIL deal. The agent took a 20 percent commission.

Re: 2022-23 Around the NCAA
I believe the transfer portal closed on May 11th. Looks like a view more entries were posted today, as the school compliance staffs process the paperwork. But new entries should end soon.
Is there any deadline on committing to a new school? There are still over 800 players in the portal who have not committed to a D1 school yet.

I don't know the source VerbalCommits uses to identify those in the portal, but the coaches seem to know who is in the portal at least a few days in advance of when we see it...so that could also be the delay.up7587 wrote:I believe the transfer portal closed on May 11th. Some/quite a few of those 800+ in the portal have actually committed, but the information has not reached VC.
With that said, there are still a number of really good players in the portal, and I am told the UP staff is looking for the right combination of position/personality/attitude before finally signing two or three more players.
Two issues with potential transfers: NIL $$$ and UP travels on scheduled airlines instead of $$$ charter flights.
There is no deadline for signing…

Scheduled airlines?! The horror!
How many WCC teams use charter flights? Obviously GU is all charters. Any others?

Re: 2022-23 Around the NCAA
Yes, GU is all charters (as is BYU), but apparently all the WCC teams except UOP and UP take some charter flights when it benefits the player's rest on tight turns between games.up7587 wrote:How many WCC teams use charter flights? Obviously GU is all charters. Any others?
The only time I can recall the Pilots MBB team taking a charter was in 2010 when they took two...both on the same night.
After losing to Kentucky in the Rose Garden (Moda Center), the team and staff hopped on two Beach King Airs out of Hillsboro provided by Harry Merlo and were flown to Pullman and then bussed to Moscow where they beat the Vandals the next evening.
For those wanting to contribute to helping the Pilots recruiting and help the team on the occasional nights when a charter flight is the best means of getting to games, all contributions to UP are tax deductible, which is not the case when contributing to the NIL collective (to the best of my knowledge).

I finally took your suggestion and looked at VerbalCommits...Kevin wrote:A lot of big names in the transfer portal today. Caleb Love UNC, TJ Bamba WSU, Langborg Princeton, Ware U of O and more. You might enjoy adding this to your list of web visits..
While fun to watch, I sure miss the days of the 4-year player.
https://verbalcommits.com/transfers/2023/D1
If their less than accurate/complete coverage of UP is any indication of their overall work, they are not as good as PilotNation.
There is no mention of Oosterbroek, either Harris, or Jordan, and the site still has Ballew committed for this season even though he has reclassified to 2024. I can understand why they don't show Sjolund turning pro. Minor stuff I guess, but still...

Yeah, Verbal Commits has not been updated much lately, at least in regards to the Pilots. But I have looked at other sites that don't show any of the incoming transfers, just the top departures.

John Canzano writes about the Oregon St. assistant basketball coach who paid a buyout to leave early for Colorado St., and blamed NIL disparities with OSU's recruiting rivals. As we've heard rumors about with Pilot players, Canzano writes
Former Indiana University basketball coach Tom Crean walked me through college basketball’s house of horrors this week.
“The scariest thing that is going on with NIL and the transfer portal — when you’re a solid player or a good player, not even a great player, there’s the potential of people shopping you to another school long before the season ends,” Crean told me.
