Good, because 35% from the field is rough!

Well, my son may be leaving UP, but we are working to get him back on campus and on the court next season. If he ultimately leaves, we, as his parents, want you to know that we had a wonderful time and the people we met here were absolutely awesome. Thank you for welcoming us into the fold.
Here is a little footage of him provided by Coach Legans, and footage taken with our phones prior to a late season game.
All the best.

Re: 2023 Offseason
So NIL means "Name, Image and Likeness". Are many of these athletes actually having their name, image or likeness used in a way that generates a return on investment to the payor? Or is it just a backdoor way to shovel money at players, with no actual application of the N, I, and L? I can see an established player like Timme promoting a casino in Spokane actually attracting someone's attention. But what about Moses Wood? We know him, but does anyone in Seattle know him? Does his N, I, and L move the needle for anything he promotes there? In a city with NFL, MLB and NHL, what college athlete who's not a Husky QB has marketing cachet?
Is there any requirement that the NIL is actually real, or is the whole thing a sham?

The TP is an unpredictable beast.

For those of you interested, the Transfer Portal is a very interesting beast. My son has received interest from Westmont College (D-2) in Santa Barbara, Providence University (NAIA) in Montana, Louis & Clark (D-3) in Oregon, Seattle-Pacific (D-2) in Washington and Boston University (D-1) in Massachusetts. So, as you can see, all 4 divisions of college basketball are perusing the TP. I'm of the opinion that any player from a school that doesn't offer an NIL package is going to be sought after by schools of the same ilk, which increases their commitment odds. It's really quite interesting that only receiving a scholarship has turned into an "L" for most players.
On a positive note, my son will be playing on the Swedish National U20 Team this summer: https://www.instagram.com/p/CrDJc4uyYPE/

I remember sitting next to you and your son at a Pilots game sometime in 2021 when he was playing for Bushnell, but not knowing then that he was going to spend a year under Shantay's tutelage.
We are going to miss you and Jarrett's mom at the Pilot Club and games, and look forward to hearing where Jarrett finally lands to continue his college basketball career.

Re: 2023 Offseason
The perception by those I talk with is that it is "lawless" out there and there is no longer any oversight from the schools or the NCAA.up7587 wrote:Is there any requirement that the NIL is actually real, or is the whole thing a sham?
Part of the problem is the open tampering of players by coaches. I am told that some UP players were being contacted by other schools throughout this past season telling them how much money they could earn and how they could play on a better team if they were to transfer.
Another aspect of the perceived problem is once a player is in the portal they are demanding, and in many cases getting, outrageously large amounts of money...far beyond what many teachers, professors, or essential government employees earn.
I am not sure who or what on3.com transfer portal is, but the site assigns a numerical grade to a player's ability and that player's potential worth on the NIL market. In the case of Jesse Edwards, the Dutch player who transferred from Syracuse to West Virginia, on3.com assigned him an NIL value of $8,500, yet when he was contacted by UP, he demanded $150,000.
https://www.on3.com/transfer-portal/wire/basketball/2023/
I do not know how successful UP's MBB team will be in the future, but I do know they will not be a team that was bought on the open market...

Re: 2023 Offseason
When - date - does Transfer Portal close. Is there any limit to NIL $ that can be paid to a player?
As others stated, this is likely the end of UP’s being able to compete for WCC - only with both BYU and Zags gone and maybe not then as there is a lot of $ in California and a lot more wealthy donors to buy those “NIL” rights .
Division 2 in our future? I hope not.

Originally from Palm Beach, Florida, Jonathon Mogbo has finally made it across the US to USF after stops NE Oklahoma A&M College and Missouri St.
Mogbo, listed as a 6-8/225 forward, has two years of eligibility remaining.

According to what I read This year a basketball athlete can enter the transfer portal March 13 to May 11. It doesn’t seem that a transfer has to Be completed in that window.
The athlete has no access to the portal. The athletic department has two days after a request to enter the athlete. So you had better make a written request at least 3 days
Before the portal window closes.
There appears to be no limit to NIL money. Timme reportedly made more than the $925K NBA rookie cap this year.
He’s not the highest paid player. Hansel Emanuel from Northwestern State took in $1.5 million, or just shy of twice the NBA first round rookie salary.

Hansel Enmanuel played 20 games (started 5) for Northwestern State, averaged 8.2 minutes per game. Scored a total of 34 points. You sure that guy got $1.5M? That's over a half million dollars an hour, or or $44K a point. Pretty poor ROI.

He has deals with Adidas, Gatorade, and T-Mobile, among others.

OK, so he actually got NIL money for the companies' exposure efforts, not for his basketball skills. Interesting. He is the exception to the rule.

That’s why they call it Name Image and Likeness .
It pretty much is the rule.
Skill isn’t part of it. If you pay for skill, it’s pro ball.

Parker Braun, a 6-10/215 center, has decided to leave Santa Clara.
Braun was one of only two players to start every game (33) last season for the Broncos and played 30 minutes per game while averaging almost 8 points and 6 rebounds per game.

Bronco fans are not surprised. They have had question marks behind his name on their list of returning players for weeks. Sounds like all of their starters from last year are not returning.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Hasn't been much interesting on the transfer portal recently. A couple WCC teams had player movement, but nothing of note. I saw that a couple of the Pilot women have committed to new schools (mid-majors), but I have not seen anything regarding the Pilot men. After Mike Meadows decommitted from LMU, Moses Wood is the only Pilot with a reported new home. Mike, Chika, Alden, Wyatt and Jarrett still show no new school.
