Tennessee St. @ Pilots - Wednesday 11/15 @ 6pm
I don't know a lot about Tennessee St. men's basketball, but I've enjoyed watching the TSU marching band from way back in the 60's when they were known as Tennessee A&I.
TSU is an HBCU institution that plays most of its games on the road as a means of funding the MBB program.
The team boasts at least seven transfers from other D1 programs to include Florida, Purdue, Charlotte and Nebraska, and is 2-0 on the season against two non-D1 opponents.
Both Coach Legans and T-Rob have described the Tigers as perhaps "the most athletic team" the Pilots will face all year.
After only two games it is difficult to say who on the TSU team will be the "one to watch," but #33 is a 6-11/300lbs Nigerian who transferred from Florida who will likely be an inside presence where he joins two other grad students who are 6-10 and 6-11 and weigh-in at 245. Athletic and "BIG" is how I would describe this team.
In TSU's two games they are shooting 46% from the floor, 37% behind the arc, and 68% from the line.
KenPom predicts the Pilots will prevail 83-73.
Since UP does not have its Purple Pride Pep Band this season, wouldn't be nice if TSU could bring their band and dancers!!

Re: Tennessee St. @ Pilots - Wednesday 11/15 @ 6pm
We are in for a treat tonight because the new floor has been installed over the existing one.
For me, as you will see in one photo, the best change is the brightness of the wood. I recently watched the replay of the UCR game and thought there was either not enough lighting in the Chiles Center or the floor was too dark to allow reflected light onto the players.
The new floor is courtesy of the Remix who have their "soft opening" game on Friday and then what they consider their "first home game" on Saturday. All of the Remix Chiles Center games will be telecast on Channel 13/713 in the Portland area.
Yes, that is a stylized version of the St. John's Bridge in the center of the court. What we haven't seen yet are the various logos on the court that will be interchangeable decals from game to game depending on if it is the Remix or the Pilots playing.
The floor in the foreground is normally under the seats across from the team benches that have been pushed back for the picture.

I never realized how "dark" the old floor was/is until seeing this comparison and looking at the newer courts at other schools.
Good job Pilots/Remix!!

I am told the marking go down as decals/tape...don't know about the nets, but they did wait until volleyball season was over to lay on the new floor.Geezaldinho wrote:I wonder what will be done about volleyball markings and nets?
EDIT: There were no volleyball markings on the "old" floor during the MBB game against UCR this past Sunday, and the volleyball team played on that court against SMC the day before.

Re: Tennessee St. @ Pilots - Wednesday 11/15 @ 6pm
Noticed they have the NBA standard hoops and shot clocks compared to what we had before. They also clearly prioritized the NBA in the three point line color and key shading.
Honestly, as far as decorative floor designs go: I love the St. John's Bridge. Far more interesting and subtle than "deep in the woods" or city skylines or blue courts or beaches or whatever else we have seen.
Could you clarify, DD: is the floor literally a brand new floor in place of our old one (e.g., sanded down, repainted, and refinished) or is it one of those puzzle piece floors standard in arenas where they switch out the floors for ice or other surfaces? Hope that question makes sense.
Side note: loved the pep band! Save the pep band!

It is just that!ExpatPilot wrote:... is it one of those puzzle piece floors standard in arenas where they switch out the floors for ice or other surfaces? Hope that question makes sense.
It arrived on pallets one day and was installed the next day by UP's two man and one woman** crew on top of the existing floor.
So, it can also be disassembled and stored to avoid wear and tear and to accommodate a volleyball net if needed.
** They may have a little help from the Remix people...who, I am told, have been excellent to work with!

Re: Tennessee St. @ Pilots - Wednesday 11/15 @ 6pm
The Good: Not much. Won the 2nd half, I guess?
The Bad: First half shooting was awful. And turnovers killed the chance to start a 2nd half comeback.
The Ugly: 34 points in the paint for TSU, mostly on layups from drives and cuts.
When the UP bigs played, the offense stalled. When they were out, there was no defense at the rim, and the Tigers scored with ease. That has to change or this will be a long season.

Face it, TSU was athletic and PHYSICAL!
In the first three games it was easy to see how Tyler Harris was one of the most athletic players on the floor...tonight TSU had a quite few Tyler Harris type athletes who were much stronger and bigger.
Hats off to the Tigers and their great fan base at tonight's game...even though they did not bring their band.

The Tigers' bigs did not score (only 3 points), but they were effective with the offense running through them and getting the ball back out, and the Tigers' starters were 9-19 on 3P shots. Conversely, the Pilots' 3P shooters rarely got an open look with time on the clock due to the aggressive defense, and they were only 8-29 on 3P tries (27.6%). Only Masic was effective at 3-6. Dengbit made 1-2, but only played 3 minutes. Legans mentioned that his role will be a 3P specialist, so he'll probably only play when the team is desperate for points.
The coaches believe this team is a good shooting team. They'll need to figure out how to make sure the players who are effective 3P shooters are getting good opportunities for shots.

For what it's worth (not much), Pilots drop 49 points in KenPom (#189) and fall to 7th in WCC rankings.

I am told the floor will remain in place until the end of the Rip City Remix home schedule at the end of March.Sound Voltex wrote:It's already giving bad vujus, can we change it back?
...which apparently means the OSAA Tournament will be played on the new floor with temporary striping and decals?
