Couldn't keep myself awake to watch, but let me look at the box score. I love any game where our team shares the points and even our walk-on can get playing time (even though he managed 3 fouls in 6 minutes?). How on earth did Walla Walla only go the free through line once the entire game?! Also, our free throw shooting was 50%. Not ideal. Otherwise, it looks like we shot well and controlled the ball well.

Smoyer knocked down a three? Why not!?

Also, dholcombe, do you mean that scrubs comment to say that we have a deep bench? Because, if so, I agree. I do not have any reservations about any of the guys we are bringing into games.

Can someone enlighten me on what the deal is with Franklin's shorts? He must be the only guy in college basketball that doesn't like the baggy shorts. Maybe he's just watched to many old videos of his dad playing in the 80's and wants to start a trend back to the short shorts?

Can't afford a tailor to hem them up permanently? No ideas, but they people next to me were asking if that's a thing among young people and I said I'm pretty sure it's just him that rolls his shorts up like that.

Re: scrubs. Yeah we a) don't have a massive drop off in talent/have a deep bench and b) we are actually red shirting some guys and not only due to transfer rules so there are also just not as many subs on the bench.

From what I remember, Smith was the kind of player whose had very active hand movement. He was doing the thing PSU was doing all game where he was putting pressure on the one guy in the backcourt and reaching in to try for a steal (there's probably an actual term for that, am not a basketball guru). I don't remember if that was exactly the source of the fouls, but he was playing overall as if it were a close match down to the final seconds.

To answer your question about the short shorts trend, it’s a thing. I was just talking to my wife about it last night when we were watching the Lakers-76ers game and how Brandon Ingram has short shorts. There are a handful of guys in the NBA and a bunch in college that prefer shorter shorts

And yeah it’s been a while since I’ve posted, I needed to take a step back because the Pilots losing so many winnable games was making me pretty miserable sometimes. I needed to change my expectations, which was a sad day. Anyway I’ve still been on and lurking.

But back to what’s important: short shorts!

Welcome back, DTLegend!

The short shorts have been trending upward for a little while. I personally prefer shorter shorts when I workout, run, and occasionally play land sports.

https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2014/11/27/st-johns-chris-obekpa-short-shorts

It's also a trend in women's hoops too. Here is your most likely player of the year candidate in women's hoops:

In high school almost all the girls and quite a few of the boys would roll the waistband of their basketball and soccer shorts to hike them up to mid-thigh....and I guess that trend is slowly making it to college ball.

Franklin's shorts do look kind of sloppy the way they hang, but instead of rolling the waistband, he tucks the bottom of his shorts into the compression shorts he and all the players wear under their basketball shorts.

Seems like his dad could just hem them for him, because the way they are now reminds me of a MC Hammer poster.

Well, the game that NPN and all the Pilot faithful have been waiting for is finally here: OIT at 5 pm!

Oregon Tech comes into this afternoon's game on a two game winning streak after beating Montana State-Northern and William Jessup to win the Lithia Toyota-Oregon Tech Classic, but they could be a bit weary after playing Friday and Saturday and riding the bus today.

OIT is 5-3 (0-3 away from home) on the season and pride themselves on their defense, having limited MSU-N, a team that had been averaging 105 points per game, to just 67 in their game on Friday.

The Hustlin' Owls are led by #2 Mitch Fink, a 6-1 sophomore guard out of Clackamas HS , averaging over 20 ppg, and 6-5 sophomore #1 Tyler Hieb from Wilsonville HS, with over 13 ppg.

OIT likes to shoot the 3-ball...to this point the have been tossing up over 26 3-point attempts per game...hitting on 34% of them.

Not much new to add that hasn't been mentioned already in previous games.

Diabate was on fire tonight.

Phil with good D as always, but still cannot get FTs to fall.

As the stream analysts mentioned, still a lot of young team struggles with the basics. There was an ugly period in the first half where OIT put some box pressure and we ended up throwing it away way too much. OIT was within 1 at one point, I think like 23-22 or something. I don't have a good basketball eye, but they also mentioned that guards weren't seeing the whole court and missing guys being open.

I just remember Darren Cooper saying "Just do a pass fake" or "Just pass it to Phil, he has the height advantage" or "this is just basic stuff" a lot.

Thanks for the thoughts on the game. We are 2-1 now, but have yet to beat another D1 opponent.

THAT ALL BEING SAID, this is a really young team and comments like the above from Coop are just indicative of such. They are going to struggle a lot in the beginning, make mistakes, and will have to figure it out this year. It's a rebuilding season after all. So, I'm glad we got to test ourselves out on some lower tier opponents before going into the buzzsaw. After the PK 80 we could very well be 2-4 and that is just fine by me as long as we learn and grow from this experience.

D'Marques Tyson can shoot, but he is prone to turnover the ball when any pressure is placed on him. His threes are why he is in there and he has for the most part delivered.

Marcus Shaver needs to hold back on the lob passes to the bigs on the break. They almost all wind up in turnovers. I do not know if it is our bigs or Marcus's lob passes being errant or both, but pulling up and setting up the offense is likely better than going for the lob dunk or whatever is being attempted. Shaver is a player. Fast for sure. He can shoot too.

Diabate may not be newcomer of the year, but he looks far less wild and was a force on the boards against OIT. Some of the hype may have been justified.

Still learning but improving too.

Short shorts are a thing....rolling them up into your compression shorts like Franklin...not a thing that I know of. Any chance Nike custom made him some proper sized short shorts for this weekend...

Multnomah University (NAIA) tonight @ 7 in the Chiles Center.

It should be another opportunity to for all the UP players to get some playing time and for the coaches to figure out the best combinations and work on some schemes and plays.

MU is really not very good this season (2-5, and coming off a 78-66 loss to Pacific Lutheran), and I cannot imagine their coach keeping in the starting lineup past halftime because they begin league play (Cascade Collegiate Conference) tomorrow night.

MU is located on Glisan St. in Portland, but their roster only includes two players from Oregon, neither of which are from Portland.

There top scorers are #21, #12,  and #4, all in double-figures, and one player (#1) has only played once but scored 18 points in that game.  Not especially tall or big, I think we can expect them to shoot from the outside much of the evening.

Only D1 teams after tonight!!

I talked to a number of fans of different teams at PK-80 who asked the same question....and none were complimentary of his look.

Turns out he rolls the waistband before tucking the bottom of his shorts into his compression shorts.

Hopefully this is the last time I address the subject of Franklin's shorts!!  Rolling Eyes

I sort of want to re-evaluate where we are as a team so far this season to remain optimistic. I know we have not beaten any D1s yet, but I think when you look at who we have played, then it's totally understandable. A lot of us were concerned with the loss to Portland State, but we now know that they are a heck of a team and we played them close. Then, three straight PK 80 teams. North Carolina and Oklahoma were sure losses against vastly superior teams. Then, by DePaul (who despite being the worst in the Big East is still much better than us) we were totally gassed.

I remain optimistic for this season to see some progress and we will find out if I have reason to be or not after we start playing some of the other D1 schools in the latter half of this non-conference schedule. Those will be better measuring sticks than everyone else we have played so far.

I agree with your line of thinking. I was just looking at the schedule, and our next few D-I opponents should give us a much better idea of where we are. Boise State is very good, but then we have Fullerton, SJSU, Seattle U, Hartford and Sac St, and I would hope there are several wins in that series.
