The most surprising thing about this team will be..... A deep run in the WCC tourney, after a rough 2nd half of conference play on the road.
The most surprising player will be... Gerun.
The big upset win will come against... Too soon to tell... I think we pull an upset in WCC play, but I still don't know enough to know who.
The best month of the season (in terms of wins/losses) will be in... October.

1) Dramatic reduction in turnovers. We averaged 15.6 turnovers/game in 11-12, and 15.0 last year. This year, we will drop below 14. (09-10 was 13.1/game; 10-11 was 12.9).
2) We will again be a feared three-point shooting team.
3) We will have 4 players average double figure points.

Pressley

SMC

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
Looking at the preseason schedule including CI there are 8 home games and 5 away games (2 in state). I am thinking we should be 8-5 and optimistically 11-2 going into league play. I don't see any team out side of Michigan State that would be favored by more than 10 points.
There are 2 guys who I expect to step up this year in Pressley and Barker. I also hope to see some good contributions from Thielke and Riley this year. They have shown it in spurts and hopefully can be strong senior leadership.
The deciding factor that will make the biggest difference will be free throw shooting. We need to be at 75% as a team and need to be able to make them at the end of games. This kept us from staying in games last year, whereas we should be in most games this year and this should put us over the top.

The AP poll is out…..the only UP opponents listed are Michigan State at #2 and Gonzaga at #15.
Tomorrow’s “secret game” opponent, Washington, also received votes.

The Seattle Times is reporting on the scrimmage, but thinks it is being held at the Chiles Center: http://seattletimes.com/html/huskybasketball/2022174441_uwmen02xml.html

UW coaches don't seem too concerned about publicizing the scrimmage. https://twitter.com/coachotz

Well, we know that fans and media couldn’t attend this afternoon's scrimmage due to NCAA rules, and those same rules are prohibiting coaches and players from giving specifics about the scrimmage, but it’s my understanding the Pilots did very well against the Huskies.

This seems a little like u8 soccer games where you aren't supposed to keep score but everyone does.DoubleDipper wrote:Well, we know that fans and media couldn’t attend this afternoon's scrimmage due to NCAA rules, and those same rules are prohibiting coaches and players from giving specifics about the scrimmage, but it’s my understanding the Pilots did very well against the Huskies.

I assume the Pilots had a happy reunion with Perris Blackwell, former USF center who now plays for UW. I really wish there was some info leaking out about the scrimmage!

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
Sometimes rules are on their face silly, even strangelovian. Apparently you can, within the rules, hold a scrimmage with another D1 team, but only if you do not mention it publicly and only if it is not held in your gym(?). That seems to be on its face silly. Apparently a number of teams are doing the same . . .so no one gains a particular advantage. Keep the doors locked to the public if you do not want it to be just another game on the schedule, but don't muzzzle the participants or the coaches.

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
Agreed, wrv....I'm sure the coaching staffs agree too.
The games can be played at one or the other's home court, but it is my understanding that in this case the Chiles Center had another event going on (UP Volleyball, I think) and Nike was happy to host it.
"Strangelovian" --- I love it; thanks for increasing my word power (once again).

Yes, the Big Ten Network will be broadcasting the Michigan St. vs. UP game on Monday at 4 PM PST.....DeanMurdoch wrote:Pretty neat....hopefully the Big Ten Network picks this one up!
#2 MSU beat #1 Kentucky in Chicago this evening.....meaning the Pilots will again be facing the #1 team in the nation in the Monday game.
BTW, the Big Ten Network on Comcast in the Portland area is on 403 and 726 (HD).

The UP website now lists a 7 PM start time for next Friday's game against Columbia.DoubleDipper wrote:11/21 Idaho 5:00 PM

I think they had to wait to see if there was to be a Women's Soccer playoff game at UP that might conflict with the basketball game before deciding on a time....but that's a guess.

Speaking of Columbia, you can bet the coaches will be tuned into the Big Ten Network for Columbia/Michigan State tonight for a 9 PM Eastern tip.DoubleDipper wrote:The UP website now lists a 7 PM start time for next Friday's game against Columbia.[/b]

The MSU/Columbia game is part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic that includes the UP game on Monday....and the three Pilots games next week against Columbia, Idaho, and North Texas. MSU moves on to Brooklyn to play Virgina Tech on Friday.

Columbia leading MSU by 6 with 11:29 left in the 2nd half. I hope the Spartans rally. I do not want to see the Pilots play an angry MSU team.DeanMurdoch wrote:Speaking of Columbia, you can bet the coaches will be tuned into the Big Ten Network for Columbia/Michigan State tonight for a 9 PM Eastern tip.

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
MSU wins over Columbia 62-53, and Columbia was either tied or ahead for 37 minutes, but Columbia then went into a ball control game the last 3 minutes WHILE THEY WERE BEHIND.
What a great crowd of student in East Lansing....but it seemed obvious to me that if a team runs, runs, runs, on MSU they can be worn down. Huge and excellent athletes, they seemed to get a bit tired mid way through the second half.
I'm sure UP is looking forward to the opportunity to upset the #1 team in the nation on Monday.....but after watching Columbia tonight, I'm not sure the Pilots are looking forward to playing them on Friday night.
