Re: 2013-14 Schedule
The last time we visited Zack Farmer’s Top 25 list it was when Thomas was listed at #22. Well, now Farmer is finally up to #6 Ryan Nicholas….here’s what we’ve missed, and what Zack has to say about Ryan and Portland.DoubleDipper wrote:Sean Farmer, Examiner.com, is again this year counting down the Top 25 players (in his estimation) in the WCC.
I’m guessing the only other UP player who will show up on the Top 25 list this year will be Ryan Nicholas….
25. Yannick Atanga, RS So, F, Santa Clara
24. Gerard Coleman, RS Jr, G, Gonzaga (transfer from Providence)
23. Jito Kok, So, F/C, San Diego (another Dutchman via Canarias)
22. Thomas van der Mars, Jr, C, Portland (preseason ranked #24 last year)
21. Gary Bell, Jr, G, Gonzaga
20. Evan Roquemore, Sr, G, Santa Clara
19. Matt Carlino, Jr, G, BYU
18. Ross Rivera, Jr, F, Pacific
17. Beau Levesque, Sr, F, St, Mary’s
16. Brad Waldow, Jr, C, St. Mary’s
15. Eric Mika, Fr, G, BYU
14. Stephen Holt, Sr, G, St. Mary’s
13. Mark Tollefsen, RS So, F, San Francisco
12. Sam Dower, Sr, F, Gonzaga
11. Tony Gill, Sr, F, Pacific
10. Cole Dickerson, Sr, F, USF
9. Stacy Davis, So, F, Pepperdine
8. Przemek Karnowski, So, C, Gonzaga
7. Christopher Anderson, Jr, PG, San Diego
6. Ryan Nicholas, Sr, PF, Portland (preseason ranked #16 last year)
With only five spots to go on Farmer’s Top 25, it is my guess they will all be guards: Pangos, Ireland, Haws, Doolin, and Dee.If Ryan Nicholas played for either Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s or BYU, he might be one of the more heralded players on the West Coast.
Being in Portland has kept Nicholas hidden from the spotlight but when you actually watch him play, it is hard not to notice his ability under the basket. He is tough, durable, and everything people look for in a power forward.
It is tough enough to nearly average a double-double for a season. It makes it even harder when that player is the focus of almost every defense his team plays. That has been the case for Nicholas over the last two seasons.
The senior forward collected eight double-doubles on the season, which included a 15-point 19-rebound outing against then-No. 21 UNLV. He followed that game with 15 points and 13 rebounds at Kentucky.
As the Pilots got into league play, teams began to collapse on Nicholas and it took a toll on his production. He scored fewer than 10 points seven times in WCC play and only four times out of league.

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
Anybody else surprised that K. Bailey didn't make this list? He was a little inconsistent at times last year (injuries my have played a part in that) but he is also easily capable of putting up 20+ points on any given night. I think with his athleticism and his ability to slash to the hoop he has the potential to be one of the best in the WCC is if he can consistently hit his outside shot. He easily makes my top 25 list. What do you all think?

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
I agree with that. I'm not sure how VDM ends up on the list and Bailey does not. I think KB is clearly the second best player on UP's squad.

Well, in terms of consistency, KB has to prove he can perform at top five level. Thomas has already done it.

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
No, I’m not at all surprised KB is not on the list……I believe all 20 currently on the list, with 5 to go, are better. I think KB has a world of potential, but is way too inconsistent to be rated in the Top 25, and IMO is NOT the second best on the Pilots team.oh brody wrote:Anybody else surprised that K. Bailey didn't make this list? What do you all think?
I guess we have to define what make a player the best, or second best, etc. I would think it has to be based on how much a particular player helps his team and his teammates on a consistent basis, day in and day out. KB has not done that.
It is obvious from the five days of practice for the Spain trip that KB’s game and body are better and bigger than before….how well that translates into consistent game performance will be vital for UP’s success this season.

Well, it was in a different order than I would have picked, but it’s still the same Top 5….Zack Farmer wrote:1. Tyler Haws, Jr, G, BYU
2. Anthony Ireland, Sr, G, LMU
3. Kevin Pangos, Jr, G, GU
4. Johnny Dee, Jr, G, USD
5. Cody Doolin, Sr, G, USF
It’s only one man’s opinion, but still, to have Ryan picked as the #6 best player in the WCC during the preseason, is quite an honor, but an honor well deserved, IMO.

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
Not at all surprised. In terms of athleticism and potential, Kevin is premier but he's largely failed to convert his athletic ability and potential to consistent on-court performance. If he can get his natural talent, mindset, motivation, etc... all going in the right direction, he could certainly be an impact player.oh brody wrote:Anybody else surprised that K. As we know, the first game of the season is against UC Davis on November 8, but now it's been revealed that we can get an early look at the Pilots against always tough Concordia-Irvine at 4PM on Saturday October 26 in the Chiles Center.
(The game preceeds to the UP women's soccer game against BYU at 7:00).

.....yes, that is the only planned exhibition game this year.
Instead of a 2nd game, the men will have a "secret scrimmage" where no fans or press are allowed. I'm guessing the "ss" will be in Eugene....but I also guess we'll never know!

Except for the glaring error at the beginning of the article that identifies UP's first opponent of the season as UC-Irvine instead of UC-Davis (hey, the writer is just a freshman, so we should cut him some slack) , this article from West Coast Convo gives a brief, but good breakdown of UP's preseason opponents.

Re: 2013-14 Schedule
Speaking of UC Davis, they have lost one of their two returning starters from last year.
Expect UTSA transfer Igor Nujic to start at the 4 in place of Adenrele when Nov. 8 rolls around.UC Davis men's basketball junior J.T. Adenrele suffered a left knee injury while performing a non-contact drill and will miss the 2013-14 season, head coach Jim Les announced Friday.
Adenrele, a 6-7 forward from Roseville, Calif., saw action in all 31 games for the Aggies, averaged 12.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in 2012-13 as a sophomore. Last year, he was also part of a roster that experienced a +10 Division I win differential from the 2011-12 season, one of the top 10 improvements in the nation.

Is the secret pre-season scrimmage being played against OSU on the Pac12 network, rendering it far less-than-secret? OR, is this game actually on November 13?DoubleDipper wrote:Oregon St. released its schedule today....

It's okay, no one can get the Pac-12 Networks anyway so they could put the scrimmage on there without violating NCAA rules

Or it could be the north-south jet-lag....I just returned home from San Francisco...
I still think the super double-secret scrimmage is against UO....but that's only a guess.
I watch a number of sporting events regularly here in the Portland area on the Pac12 Network....but I always assumed the network was mostly a west of the Rockies kind of deal anyway.....DeanMurdoch wrote:It's okay, no one can get the Pac-12 Networks anyway so they could put the scrimmage on there without violating NCAA rules

Oh? I was under the impression that Portland was one of the areas that had great difficulty viewing the P12N.
I know I'm limited to whatever I can get on DirecTV here, and there certainly doesn't seem to be any resolve in sight to that dispute.

The only network in Oregon that shows the P12N is Comcast. I'm not alone in refusing to use that service for its customer support issues and other network offerings ( or lack thereof).

I am positively delighted with Comcast's customer service before 8pm (that was definitely NOT the case up until about two months ago), their programming, including the Pac12 Network, and my new X-1 box, which seems to have unlimited HD storage capacity and records four (soon to be six) programs at once while watching another live.Geezaldinho wrote:The only network in Oregon that shows the P12N is Comcast. Re: 2013-14 Schedule
I have had generally neutral to good experiences with Comcast... add in the fact that my condo association gets a bulk discount and I am happy. The Pac-12 network really is pretty darn good--the production quality, the in-studio shows, etc. They even have pulled a miracle and made Rick Neuheisel watchable as an in-studio football show host. I can't stand that guy, but he is good in that role!
The network also shows quite a bit of soccer & volleyball this time of year, although I have to hit mute whenever Ann Schatz is talking.
