Re: 2013 Recruiting: Wintering + Sharp + Zubizarreta + Gerun
Reveno refers to this potential student athlete as a "transfer." In the most common usage that would apply to someone transfering from another four year institution, in all probability another D1 school, not a JC, or so I hope, even if we do not have his services next year.
Anyone have any idea why Ehlers packed his bags?
I assume the two events, Ehlers and the transfer, are related only in that Ehlers departure freed up a scholarship and roster spot, not that Ehlers transfer was at all because the transfer was considering Portland . . .
Including Tim Douglas that makes three leaving the program in a little more than a year. The high rate of transfers is concerning, particularly given the win loss ratio in the last couple of years.

Could see Barker and van der Mars on the floor at the same time more often next season when Nicholas needs a breather? Rev did this very occasionally towards the end of the year last year, perhaps we'll see more of it with the PF depth allegedly taking a hit.DoubleDipper wrote:Regardless of who it is, if it's a D-1 transfer, it leaves the PF position very, very thin for next year!
I'd agree with that, it does sound like a D1 transfer. I'm sure we'll hear soon enough.wrv wrote:Reveno refers to this potential student athlete as a "transfer." Oh, absolutely, but as noted in earlier posts.....fatigue and/or further injuries would be a huge problem.DeanMurdoch wrote:Could see Barker and van der Mars on the floor at the same time more often next season when Nicholas needs a breather? IF Alec, Bobby, Zubi, Tanner, David, Korey and others are hitting from the outside it will make the inside game and rebounding much more "doable" for the "BIGs" regardless of who's in there.
Who knows, maybe JB will have a breakout year.

Re: 2013 Recruiting: Wintering + Sharp + Zubizarreta + Gerun
So I'm just going to throw this out there. It is from way, way, way, way, way left field, but just a thought.
Mike Moser is currently looking to transfer, he's been reported to visit Washington, Oregon, and Gonzaga. He's from Portland, and wants to be in the Pacific NW, and he's from Portland and loves Portland. He wants to be the focal point of his team to really show off and hone his skills for the NBA. He would be in an NBA city, and Rev is a "big man" coach.
Now granted he supposedly wants to be on a contender and really hasn't had any interest in Portland ever really, and the chances of him being the one to commit are probably slim to none, but who knows.
Now if he fits our team/Rev's vision, I'm not sure and I'm not saying anything on that front. Just throwing out a rumor that has absolutely no support or weight.

1) Moser? Come on now.
2) It's pretty standard for schools not to put out a transfer release while said transfer is still enrolled in classes at the original institution (not sure if this is NCAA rule or merely ethics). If DoubleDipper is right and the transfer is indeed Volodymyr Gerun from WVU, there probably won't be anything official until after finals are over in a couple weeks (may hear through other outlets, though).
Case in point, Jabarie Hinds is going from WVU to Massachusetts as announced by the player several days ago. Nothing official from uMass, though.

Say...you've gotten downright goofy since you don't have to take those drug tests anymore.
Any correlation?

I'm not ready to change the last question mark in the title thread to "Gerun" just yet but I saw a pretty significant clue today that leads me to believe that DoubleDipper has been right all along.

Related question - has there been a D1 transfer TO Portland under Reveno? If not, when was the last time this happened? (Preferably with transfer year spent at UP counting against scholarship cap).

Re: 2013 Recruiting: Wintering + Sharp + Zubizarreta + Gerun
On the theory that once is sometimes not enough, and that what is worth saying is worth repeating, our intrepid reporter on the program wrote this:
"I went through the transfer list looking for a “nugget” that a small D-1 school such as UP might attract from a big-time program….and one name caught my attention…….6-10 240 power forward Volodymyr Gerun from the Ukraine, transferring after playing a total of 33 minutes in his one season at West Virginia.
Why do I mention him….because he played at Canarius with Thomas and he’s looking for a place to transfer and develop during a redshirt year. Gerun was required to sit out the first six games this past season because the NCAA determined he played three games on a professional team in the Ukraine during the 2011 season, but I can’t determine why he is listed as a sophomore, not a freshman….unless it’s the Robin Smeulders rule….which I thought had been changed.
Gerun has the credentials to be a big time player, but he was stuck behind four other players at the beginning of the season at WVU who were able to play when he couldn’t and had been with the team all summer or last year. Gerun didn’t arrive at WVU until late August and showed up without sufficient West Virginia/English skills to keep up with everything the coaches were saying at the beginning of the season and he fell even further behind.
He graduated from high school in 2011, and in 2011-12, the year before he arrived at WVU, Gerun led his Ukrainian team in scoring (18.2 ppg.), rebounding (11.1 rpg.) and blocks (2.1 bpg.) at the under-18 European Championships, including a 29-point, 14-rebound performance against the Italian National Team. He also had 23 points and 14 rebounds against Finland and 25 points and 10 rebounds against the Czech Republic. Prior to that, he was named MVP of the Under-16 European Championships after averaging 17.3 points per game during the tournament.
Nope, there are no scholarships currently available at UP, but A.) You just never know…one could still pop up, and B.) Maybe he can wait a year just so he can have the benefit of Rev’s coaching."
I cannot determine if DD is that much of an internet mole or whether he actually has a connection . . .either way I like the information.

To answer DeanMurdoch's query: I don't think Reveno has signed a D-1 transfer to the U of P, but he inherited three from Holton: Darren Cooper, Ben Sullivan, and Kevin Field.

Re: 2013 Recruiting: Wintering + Sharp + Zubizarreta + Gerun
No one except Jake really knows why he's left the program, and I'm not sure even he knows, except that it appears he just wasn't getting the full D-1 basketball experience he was expecting at UP. He's been in touch with some other D-1 programs, I understand, but has not received much interest in return.wrv wrote:Anyone have any idea why Ehlers packed his bags?

Yes, it was Jake's decision....even his teammates were taken by complete surprise and really can't explain his motives. Just look at the size of the transfer lists in recent years; kids are used to having in their way, and if it's not what they like, they move on. It was apparent to some that Jake had to work much harder than he expected in the classroom, on the court, and in the conditioning drills….he might just be looking for something “easier.”
We all know it's a year-to-year contract, but rarely is it the school that does not renew the contract.....and if they don't they are the "bad guys," but when the student doesn't renew it's the school that is brought into question, not the student/athlete. It doesn't seem fair, but it's a reality.

I assure you I do not have, nor have I had, any connections or inside info....I doubt anyone does. I just noted that Coach Huggins at WVU had "chased' even more players....and when I did a little internet research I simply saw the BIG man had a Canarius connection.wrv wrote:I cannot determine if DD is that much of an internet mole or whether he actually has a connection . . .either way I like the information.
Believe me, if Mr. Gerun turns up at UP, it will be a total surprise and just a great guess on my part. No need play the lottery, I will have made my one right guess already.

Yea, the odds alone, based upon the number of transfers we've seen over the last few years had me thinking someone could drop out at the end of the school year....but I did NOT think it would be Jake.up7587 wrote:Well, DD was certainly correct about one thing:DoubleDipper wrote:there are no scholarships currently available at UP, but A.) In an earlier post I mentioned that 75% of last year's freshman class is now gone....but the reality is they are all gone for different reasons.
1. David wanted to take a shot at D-1 to see if he could play well enough to earn a scholarship....he learned that D-2 will be a good place for his talents.
2. Oskars got in disciplinary trouble with the school, not the team or athletic department.
3. Jake is moving on, but I believe it's because the whole D-1/school experience was tougher than he expected.
4. Bryce is staying, and when he goes home to Sacramento in couple of days he'll have a temporary house guest with him. Big Red will be getting a little one-on-one basketball tutoring from Bryce's dad, former All-America and NBA player, Harold. That is a GOOD sign!!

If it is Volo, it would be a pretty good fit for our needs. Granted he wont play next season but he'd come in 2014-2015 season as a Junior with Bryce. I don't see any confirmation on the rumor but maybe there will be some soon

Make of it what you willBasketball Federation of Ukraine, Ukrainian Basketball Superleague, iSport.ua, FIBA, FIBA Europe, U18 European Championship Men, 成龍 Jackie Chan, WVU Men's Basketball, WVU Coliseum, West Virginia University, SHARKS, University of Portland
