I'm surprised there are only 2 West Coast teams and 3 or 4 (if you count DC) North East teams.
D.C. is not North East. It's south of the Mason and Dixon line surrounded by Virginia, which seceded from the Union, and by Maryland, whose legislature voted to secede but was occupied immediately by the Union Army. Restaurants and bars were still segregated when I was in College despite the civil rights act of 1963.
Maryland's state song is from a poem Written during that occupation which has this as its last stanza:
I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Washington DC was definitely a Southern-sympathizer town and it was no mistake that Booth fled first to Maryland and then to Virginia.
While not quite on topic, I've always liked JFK's description of DC as a town of Northern hospitality and Southern efficiency.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Grew up in Maryland - DC. Note I did not count DC as NE.
Grew up singing Oh Maryland, but never heard that verse.
Maryland remained part of the Union during the Civil War.
Maryland outlawed slavery in 1864, before the end of the Civil War.
But if we look at the Megalopolis we see it extends from Boston to DC.
So if someone else wants to call it the NE I wont argue.
At any rate, I think the West coast needs 2 more teams.

Lol. I have seen OSU women's soccer before down at my alma mater, Sac State. And yes, during the practice period, I heard on of the players saying "Haha, we're the Beavers" as if to acknowledge that anatomical slang meaning.
Soooo, J-W. Hope that works for them, but frankly I'd wish all their matches would be at Merlo. C'mon, UP. Help make it happen.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Saw today that the new league is called the National Women’s Soccer League and it is to be administered by U.S. Soccer with play beginning in April or May.
Not really a lot of imagination in the league name….and that’s GOOD!! The league doesn’t need gimmicky stuff to get started, or even survive; it just needs solid soccer and good publicity.
With the confirmation of the league name and logo, the National Women's Soccer League has also launched its official pages on Facebook and Twitter. A league website will be launched in the near future.
The only team that has not announced a name for their team is Seattle. The seven other teams in the league are: Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, FC Kansas City, Portland Thorns FC, Sky Blue FC (New Jersey), Washington Spirit, and Western New York Flash (Buffalo).

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Just a portion of the Q&A with Timbers Army member Brent Diskin…the designer of the Portland Thorns’ crest:
See the entire article here:http://www.portlandtimbers.com/news/2012/12/qa-avid-timbers-army-member-brent-diskin-talks-about-his-unique-design-portland-thorns
Do he mean "girly" like the pony-tailed league logo?A soccer crest has to do a lot of things. It is an icon that represents the team, the town, and its supporters. It’s a symbol that is flashed after a goal and rallied around in difficult times. The crest should show the spirit and determination of a team, and connect that team with its city. Most of all, it should be worn with pride.
The Thorns crest was designed with this in mind. I tried to stay away from any imagery that would be considered too “girly” or “cartoony”. The combination of symbolism and simplicity is meant to inform all that this is a team that this is a professional team that means serious business.

Our friend Nacional Tijuana produced another clue on BS:
Cone is Parlow's married name.
And she retweeted Merrit's tweet on her feed.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Surprise!
Her credentials appear to be that she took some coaching courses, coaches National u14-u15, and has been a volunteer assistant at UNC.
I wonder if the Thorns will be playing a 3-4-3 and subbing a lot?
I hope she has the good sense to loose the powder blue T-shirts before she gets here.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
I’m sure Cindy will find it kind of tough to leave Chapel Hill, where she is beloved by everyone, but it should be a wonderful opportunity for her after coaching at the youth level these past few years.
Her credentials as a player are impeccable, including two gold’s and a silver at the Olympics…we’ll just have to see how that translates into her ability as a coach.
It would seem a good move for the Thorns.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
I am optimistically apprehensive. She has no head coaching experience of any kind at the Senior level.
And no team she was ever on played what Clive called Attractive football. If the team plays dump and run they will lose their fans.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
I get she has the chache of USWNT... But it seems there are plenty of assistant coaches with a more local perspective/flavor who might have been a better choice.
Plus coaching youth soccer and pro soccer... hahaha SLIGHTLY different.
