Re: New Women's Pro League!
But then again... Getting paid ANY wage to play soccer seems like a pretty cool notion to me....

I thought staying in sports for that kind of money would be cool once too...
Then the rent went up, the car broke down, the health insurance premiums skyrocketed, and my clothes wore out.
World 'o business here I come!

Kid, Thank goodness you offered Alex a home before Double Dipper got there. We might have had to censor the thread.Indigo Kid wrote:PS Alex Morgan can stay with our family...

She is young enough (or maybe I am old enough) that she could be my granddaughter. So maybe DD would be a better choice for a host!

You are leading me to believe that the womens soccer forum is composed mostly of geezers, not just the well publicized PurpleGeezer?

You guys....!
Haha, Mrs. DD says, "Only old people get up early and post on PN before 9AM….". When Geez gets up this afternoon, I'm sure he'll chime-in as well.
I learned many, many years ago to look with my eyes, not my hands….and about the closest I come to needing a censor these days is while being felt-up (and down) by TSA.
Yes, Alex is one of my 500 rotating wallpaper pictures, but so is Rev…..contrasts!

At these prices even I could sit in the fur-lined seat club.
But you know how I feel about joining a club who would have me as a member.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
A source I spoke with yesterday suggested that, in reality, $18K is on the high side for most players...."It's the opportunity to continue doing something they love that keeps many of them going."PurpleGeezer wrote:But the total salary cap thrown out by the ussf for players not in residency was a $200k per team Cap for the 11 players, or about $18k per player.....
And the job market I suppose....but now that women can "officially" see combat (and the world) in the US Armed Forces, and as college grads can make $35,000 per year + allowances + benefits as a newly minted 2nd Lieutenant/Ensign....

Re: New Women's Pro League!
The league announced a day or two ago that squad sizes will be bigger than the original 18 players. It could be 20 or 22.
But there has been no announcement that the league upped the salary cap for each team, so yeah you could be talking $200k split amongs 13 or 15 players. And as you say, the split probably won't be equal.
I'm not sure comparing to military people in combat is a fair comparison. Soccer can be a brutal sport, but...

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Part of the management function in the NWSL may be finding supplemental employment for at least some of their players.
Re: New Women's Pro League!
Perhaps be paid youth coaches? Or something soccer-related where they can still keep their fitness up year round AND have built in outreach to the community?

Oh, absolutely....and the military is not for everyone, some say, but it served me so well that I'm always encouraging and recruiting others to take a look.PurpleGeezer wrote:I'm not sure comparing to military people in combat is a fair comparison. Soccer can be a brutal sport, but...

Re: New Women's Pro League!
The double standard about men's salaries being higher than women's salaries for the same job is alive and well. Women still get shafted in the workplace, especially in this sport where they have yet to establish a league that can endure. No wonder drafted players like Megan and Tobin go to France where they can earn a paycheck while the new league figures out what it's doing. In another sport, another reality: Typical Super Bowl advertisers are paying $3.7 million this year for one men's football game, according to AdAge. That could bankroll one of the new team's payrolls for. years. And no one is asking Ray Lewis or even LaMichael James to suck it up for the Ravens and stay at a fan's house.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Well yeah, Merritt can pay them the same $ he's paying Trencito, Valeri, et al. Keep that up and we'll be 0-for-3 in keeping women's leagues alive.
So yes, the new league will have to figure out what it's doing and how to make the finances work, and yes, the better Americans will be going abroad until then. Sounds like early MLS, actually, and they seem to be doing well now.

Re: New Women's Pro League!
Uh, is there no accountability for market demand? All pro athletes should make the same? Should all movie stars get paid the same, or should the ones people want to pay money to see get paid more than the ones nobody wants to see.purple haze wrote:The double standard about men's salaries being higher than women's salaries for the same job is alive and well. The Super Bowl advertisers are putting their money where it is to their best benefit. Millions of people want to watch that game. Millions don't want to watch women's soccer.
Major tennis tournaments give equal prize money. But the women have to do less work to earn it (2 out of 3 sets vs. 3 out of 5). What's up with that?

Well, by the accountability for market demand and viewership standard, maybe things need to be somewhat recalibrated. It could be that people watch what is offered. In the Olympics, everything was offered, and here is what happened in the most viewed television event in history.
During the London Olympics, NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) set multiple viewership records:
Team USA Women’s Gold Medal soccer match is NBC Sports Network’s most watched event in history with 4.350 million viewers.
Coverage of Team USA Men’s Basketball on NBCSN averaged more than 2.6 million viewers (2.632), including a high of 3.330 million viewers for Team USA-Argentina group stage game (8/6).
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/08/13/london-olympics-on-nbc-is-most-watched-television-event-in-u-s-history/144780/
So... I guess the Olympic soccer team should be getting a bit more than what NBA Dream Team players make. But I think they would settle for a living wage for now.
